Today there was a college coach on campus to talk with our head coach about one player he was interested in and he was getting pitched another one that our coaches believe would be a good fit. When Carson walked in the coach said 'Whoa, you're a big boy, are you a starter?' to which my son replied 'this year I am, yes sir.' (it was his way of giving his HC **** about not starting last year but in a friendly way.. they have a good relationship. He then asked Carson what grade he was in and Carson told him that he was a sophomore, going to be a Jr. They did the whole 'nice to meet you' and traded names but of course my son is a brain dead teenager who didn't bother to remember the coaches name. When Carson came back out and passed the office to head to the field, he noted that they must have still been talking about him because the statement 'that boy loves Notre Dame, can ya believe it?' was said.. (there are no other ND fans in the program, or probably the area)

So I asked Carson what the guy was wearing and he said "Oh, he was from Michigan, I remember that. He had a cool dark blue Nike pullover that said Michigan on it." Carson went on to say 'he was fit, and older, but you could tell he played some ball back in the day.'

I went to Google and pulled up your assistant coaches images, no names. He looked right at the picture of Greg Mattison and said 'That's him, I remember his nose. That's definitely him!' I informed Carson that was Greg Mattison who is arguably the finest defensive line coach in all of college football and maybe one of the top 5 in the game on any level. Carson just gave it the 'Oh, cool. Good to know' (because all teenage boys are idiots).

Your staff already has a commitment from a safety out of nearby Florence and it appears Jimbo is really hitting the South hard, especially this area of North Alabama that somehow doesn't get the love of Birmingham or Montgomery despite producing several high profile recruits. It seems that they're interested in Josh Marsh, which makes sense because everyone in the country is even if he doesn't appear on the internet recruitnick boards yet. He's started since his freshman year. He'll be a junior next season. He's a 6'3" 225lb MLB who also runs track and field. He's one of the 5 fastest kids in the state as a freshman and sophomore. Historically, guys as good as Josh wind up playing at Alabama (Rolando McClain), but Josh is a bit different in that he's a preacher's son who travels the world doing ministry work. He keeps trying to get Carson to go to Africa with him and I keep shooting it down because they go to some real **** holes with some nasty diseases.

The other kid, the one our coaches are pushing, is Alex Marx. He's not a big guy, but he's blazing fast. He is absolutely uncoverable in our area and we had something like 5 DI DBs in our area last year. He will play QB for us mostly, but we will split him out at WR and he'll play free safety as well. He's just too good of an athlete to take off the field.

If you guys wind up holding that camp down here, Carson will certainly be attending.

That's exciting to hear. I sure hope this is the beginning of Carson getting the attention he deserves. It only takes one program to show an interest, which in turn will attract the attention of other programs.

Am I mistaken or did Mattison's son go to ND?

Corey that's good news for Carson, I hope he has a great year this year and starts to get noticed more and more!

Funny comment about ND, esp since Mattison was involved!

His daughter played softball at ND and graduated, I'm thinking his son played football at Iowa though.

Terry's comment about Mattison's kids jogged my memory. He's right.

Corey, here is a list of staff with images:

Probably was Mattison given your Nike reference. Michigan is still an Adidas school till August when we switch back to Nike. Prior to that, we were Nike and Mattison was a coach with Carr during that time. So guess Mattison may have held on to some of his old gear unless the coaches are getting new stuff early.

Another old guy posibility is Don Brown, our new DC who we hired away from BC.

Great to hear that Carson is getting attention!!
