Bet you didn't even know it existed!! It's of course controversial, even here in Texas some are esp galled that it falls on the day after MLK Day. A blogger for the Chronicle wrote an article that was critical and the blogger was clearly outraged.

Those who are passionate about our heritage must certainly be concerned about preserving all of it. Surely they will support a broader Civil War Remembrance Day. Here’s a modest proposal. Instead of ripping out our monuments to Jefferson Davis and Robert E. Lee, let’s go further and embrace a comprehensive celebration of our heritage.

Let’s also remember the Texans in the Hill Country who resisted the Confederacy over the course of the war. Next to the Confederate statues at the University of Texas let’s post new monuments remembering the dozens of anti-slavery settlersslaughtered by Confederate troops at Nueces. Let’s remember The Great Hanging at Gainesville, where Texans opposed to slavery, or merely accused of being opposed to slavery, were lynched by their neighbors. Beside the monument at the Capital remembering Terry’s Confederate Cavalry, let’s post a monument to the Civil Rights leaders who led Houston’speaceful desegregation of lunch counters. Let’s remember our black citizens who persevered bravely through slavery and Jim Crow to build their own unique contributions to the state.

I doubt if it's as contentious in the old south as it is here in Texas though.
