Being at Alabama has been a very good thing for Lane Kiffin, he was trained at USC where everybody is a rock star and now he's some place where everybody is anonymous and asked to just do their jobs. I don't know if he's rehabbed his image enough to move back into being a HC again at a good program. If I were him I wouldn't take a job, if one is offered, at some place that is a resurrection project. I'd wait. As far as Saban vs the Spread, no doubt kp he's not a great coach because he can only beat teams with conventional defenses. He's a great coach because he figures things out. I don't doubt that he and Smart have not just sat back and gone woe is me they go too fast, we can't substitute, whine whine whine...they've figured it out. If they don't make the mistakes they did vs Ole Miss I don't think they'll lose in StarkVegas..but the MSU QB is really good and should give them a batttle.
I think recruiting a different type of player was a big part of figuring it out. Alabama had a 300 lb defensive lineman jump over the offensive line to block a FG a couple of weeks ago. If you can recruit the big, fast and agile player and then give him the right defensive scheme, that goes a long way to addressing changing offensive strategies.
I know it is hard to believe but we have made 3 plays on offense....and scored on each of them. Otherwise Miss St. has stopped us. Thank goodness for our defense.
When Kiffin figured out that if Alabama runs the ball first...Alabama wins...this game was over. Roll Tide.
Looks like the game after the big game hangover was all on LSU. And my jinx didn't work..... Congrats.... see you in Atlanta.
The loss knocks LSU out of the running for SECW. Here are the remaining scenarios in the SECW if I've interpreted the SEC rules correctly: If Bama beats Auburn, they win the SECW with a 7-1 record, ALABAMA. However, if Auburn beats Bama, Alabama is 6-2: - If LSU wins out to keep pace at 6-2, including a win over Ole Miss (knocking Ole Miss out): ---- If Arkansas also wins out to keep pace at 6-2, LSU loses the tiebreak by having lost to both Bama and Arkansas, and Bama has the tiebreak over Arkansas, ALABAMA. ---- If Arkansas loses one more, then LSU loses the tiebreak to Bama, ALABAMA. - If Ole Miss wins out to keep pace at 6-2, including a win over LSU: ---- If Arkansas loses one more, Ole Miss wins the tiebreak over Bama, OLE MISS. ---- If Arkansas also wins out to keep pace at 6-2, all three teams (Bama, Ole Miss, Arkansas) are 1-1 against each other so it would come down to the record against the division team with the next-best conference record. -------- If LSU, keep going (all would have beat them). -------- If A&M, Arkansas gets knocked out and Ole Miss wins the tiebreak over Bama, OLE MISS. -------- If MSU, keep going (all would have beat them). -------- If Auburn, Bama gets knocked out (losing to Auburn where the other two beat them) and Arkansas wins the tiebreak against Ole Miss, ARKANSAS. - And of course, if Arkansas wins out to keep pace at 6-2, but LSU and Ole Miss both lose one more, Bama wins the tiebreak against Arkansas, ALABAMA.
Kesley, That's some impressive analysis, but as far as I'm concerned another loss by Alabama means no National Championship chances. At this point in the season, that would be a major disappointment. Also for us to not beat Auburn would be another major disappointment. All of those other scenarios are just chaff. 8)
I've lived here long enough to know 2 things. 1. This Auburn team isn't very good. 2. That will mean jack crap come time for the Iron Bowl as both sides are playing on adrenaline for 4 quarters, or should be. Plus, weird stuff happens in that game. Real voodoo chicken dance kinda stuff.
There are 3 games where I don't care what the final score is... a one point win is fine...Tennessee, LSU and AUBURN. If Alabama can embarrass Auburn then that is icing on the cake. 8)
I hear ya Kp.... those three games for me are Tenn, Ga and FSU. But I would gladly take a one point win any time in Atlanta also.
Why UF has a chance vs. the Tide: Florida ranks fifth nationally in total defense (280 yards per game) and fourth nationally in scoring defense (14.5 points per game). The only other two schools ranked in the top five in both categories are Wisconsin and Boston College. But there isn’t a defense in the country forcing opposing offenses into three-and-outs at a higher rate than the Gators. Florida leads the FBS, forcing three-and-outs 32 percent of the time.
If somehow Alabama loses to Auburn and the Gators lose to FSU then that really throws the whole playoff into a spin. Same if the Big 10 ends up with a 1 loss Champion.
Don, I am an old man and I have seen Auburn beat a heavily favored Alabama too many times to take this game for granted. There was a game in the 70's where Alabama was ahead 16 to 3 in the 4th qtr. Auburn blocked two punts and ran them in for touchdowns. I had to live for years with bumper stickers that read "Punt Bama Punt" and of course there are still bumper stickers around this state that say "Hey Bama, got a second?" referring to the "kick six games two years ago. We led the Cam Newton led Auburn team 24 to 0 several years ago only to have one of the greatest comebacks in series history take that one away. You don't know the half of it. :x
Any bumper stickers come out of that Auburn/Bama game where Brodie Coyle was sacked like 100 times? :?
The Arkansas loss knocks them out of the running for SECW. If Bama wins the Iron Bowl, they play Florida for the SEC. If Bama loses the Iron Bowl and Ole Miss wins the Egg Bowl, then Ole Miss plays for the title. If Ole Miss loses the Egg Bowl, Bama plays for the title.
I jinxed myself by starting this topic. The way Florida has been playing I wouldn't want to draw any attention to UF getting their ass beat by Alabama....
