Well boys pep rally tonight, game tomorrow night. The picks are in and the entire staffs of both Irish Sports Daily and Irish Illustrated have picked the Irish to win. Usually in a big game like this there are always a couple who pick against us. Funny: Jerome Bettis to C.J. Prosisse yesterday... "So... Were you a great running back in disguise or were you just a terrible receiver who needed to be moved?" - J. Bettis joking to C.J.
24-24 at half... unbelievable. fumble going in o go up 28-10, then have 1st and goal from the 3 and go backwards settle for a fg. Then get snookered again by a trick play. Can't believe how we squandered this game so far. Need to score on the first possession.
Great resilience, strength, and character shown tonight in the 4th quarter. Two outstanding interceptions, especially by Russell, leading to a critical FG. Although we scored the last 17 points, it was the defense who sealed the win by completely bottling up USC and preventing a late comeback by a very dangerous team. Kessler is the best QB we'll face all season, and he has great receivers and RBs. I'm glad that game is in our rearview mirror.
I'm not but I think it's a completely different game if Hunter doesn't fumble at the 1. It really blew the momentum ND had. We're in deep do do if Day gets hurt. As it is we're woefully thin on the DL. Kizer takes too many sacks. He needs to adjust his internal clock. CJ's going to play on Sundays. Nice to see Corey Robinson make a great TD catch. We needed that. It looks like Yooney Tunes has found his stroke. Do we have any Tight Ends? Where do we hide them?
Sid's right, the kids never quit. It looked a little bleak when they went up 31-24. That throw by Kizer to Fuller was amazing. Deshon is at times great, but as gipper noted he holds on to the ball too long and took some sacks that he dhould have taken. Good on Corey Robinson for making that great catch in the endzone. It was a very tough catch, he needed it and we needed it. USC has just so much speed at skill, that RB Jones was very good and fast, Jackson and JuJu also blazers. Kevarie Russell maybe is finally rounding into shape that INT he made was nothing short of spectacular. I'll give Kessler his props, he really is a tough QB to handle, he gets flushed and still makes the throw. Very difficult to get on the ground tonight. I still can't believe we bit on yet another flea flicker. You can bet that Temple will have that in their game plan.
ND <t>After listening all week to this usc ******** I am more than happy we beat these jerks from LA. Their coach is drunk again and suspended, then he's fired then it's the Trojan 30 for 30 crap on espn, then it's the anniversary of the "bush push", then it's the Keshawn Johnson pep talk, then it's the media seeming to think all this crap means USC will really be focused on the game and on and on blah blah and freakin blah! Guess what? After all that crap they brought their soap opera show to South Bend and the Irish kicked there ass! Hope they enjoy the plane ride home!</t>
I am pleased with the win. I find it almost ridiculous to complain at all because you could have pulled a Michigan and gave away the lead on a fluke last play. At the same time, there's always room for improvement and Gip's right, we need to go for the kill early. The fumble by TH Jr just flipped all the momentum in the game. That little slip in momentum is a trademark of all Kelly teams. We so rarely just put someone away and make it a laugher. However, I loved the heart and perseverance shown by the team to recapture the moment and drop the last 17 points of the match. I don't know about you guys, but Flutie is insufferable. ND player makes a great play= "He got away with a little push there, but that's a good play.' USC player makes a 3 yard gain= "Wow, look at that athleticism.' Any win over USC is a great win. They are all never by enough, but there's no such thing as a bad win against USC.
Everything was there for a rout by ND. The first play bomb TD had the crowd roaring. The blocked punt TD was a thing of beauty and again the crowd was really in it. Hunter was about to put ND up by 18 in the first quarter. This was a parka game. By that I mean the weather is chilly. ND players stand there on the sideline in their shirt sleeves and sneer at SC. The SC player huddle under their parkas and dream about getting on their plane and heading to their beach. We were that close to turning on the parka switch and then we let them off the hook. That being said, we shut them down for the last 25 min. of the game. As much of an impact that Hunter's fumble had on the game it was countered by Russell's great int. Poor Sheldon Day, he played so hard that he had to take himself out just to get a blow. Did Tillery play? I don't recall hearing his name once. I loved the first offensive play we ran. Fuller made the statement that SC didn't own the speed game. The guy touched the ball 3 times and accounted for 141 yds. He's special. And while we're talking about special how about Prosise? Those 4th quarter runs when we took over on the 10 were just great. Looking ahead, I see a real test with Pitt. They always give us fits. And then there's the poop in the punchbowl BC team. I hope we're the Green Monster in Fenway. I hope to see Wimbush in the Temple and Wake games. That would be really good for the team. And then there's Stanford. Hard to believe that they lost to Northwestern. That's just the kind of game we'll need if we want to impress late in the season.
My observations: Deshone Kizer looks better every week. If I were Zaire I would seek out a faith healer because he may need a miracle. The running game kick started when Alex Bars went down with an ankle injury and an already injured Quentin Nelson returned to action two weeks early. It was like flipping a switch. USC is athletic but they had nothing on us in spite of Flutie's constant pandering. Kelly has really evolved as a game coach. No more panic stricken rants, very much in control. The DBs rallying their games in the 4th quarter after being dissected throughout the game was unexpected. I'd love to hear the back story on that. CJ Prosise is the MVP of this team. He has played at a consistently high level in every game and has taken this team on his back every time they have needed a lift. It is time to get Nyles Morgan on the field more at MLB. Joe Schmidt continues to miss more tackles than he makes and our soft spot remains straight up the gut. Uncle Rico's defense continues to be exciting and very high risk. We blitzed the passing lanes open throughout and when you face a good QB like Kessler you better get to him or else. The anecdote about Max Redfield late in the game may have shed light on it.... the play by play guy mentioned that Redfield takes 18 hour course loads and have become fluent in Madarin Chinese in pursuit of his career goals and that learning Chinese was easier than learning Uncle Rico's defense.Too much detail slows great athletes down.
They beat U Mass by 2 and then took out Charlotte, Tulane and UCF. Impressed? Their strength of schedule is 95th.
Well, I'm happy with this game. We beat USC in the Bush Push game, and did that make us feel any better to have that honor and pride in knowing we out played them? It didn't for me. Beat USC. Beat our one true rival. Beat them anyway you can. Take that and celebrate for a year. I plan on it.
ND <r><QUOTE><s> </e></QUOTE> Yes, yes and YES!<br/> <br/> Those usc scum are still laughing about the game they stole from us 10 years ago(Bush/Push) Corey so I'm with you. Beat them anyway you can and brag about it for the next twelve months!! I will for damn sure!!!</r>
USC always has a lot of talent and they generally over the years have had better and faster skill position players. Not every year, but many years they do. Yesterday Will Fuller flew by their fastest guy in Adore Jackson. I'm just so sorry that Tori Hunter Jr, got stripped going in for the score. That would have maybe put them away with no 2nd qtr comeback. But he did and they did but we had the last laugh. oh yeah, Alex Bars broke his ankle....done for the year. The hits just keep coming don't they. Nelson needs this bye week to fully heal, he should be ready to go 100% for Temple. Just pray that Rochell and Day hold up all year.
