lose your starting RB and starting QB in the first 2 games...yeah that's sucks. It's makes all those reps that Golson stole from Kizer by playing in the spring when he had no intention of staying even more important.
I try real hard not to hate on Golson, but Terry makes a very good point. This is what happens when you don't pull the trigger and name a starter. It was always implied that it was going to be Zaire. Don't be surprised to see Wimbush take off the red hat this season out of necessity. Not that Kizer sucks, but the nature of the offense, a QB is as vulnerable to injury as a RB. We will forever need to keep 3 QBs ready to play. Kelly had this issue at Cincinnati. This isn't a coincidence.
Injuries to key players can determine the success of a team in a hurry. Any long term injury is bad, but with key players involved, it can literally end one's hopes for a successful season!
It's not Golson's fault. It was Kelly's unwillingness to name a starter. Golson finally made up his mind for him.
Wait a minute! Have we forgotten that days after the bowl game Golson was shopping himself around to LSU? http://www.nola.com/lsu/index.ssf/2015/01/notre_dame_qb_everett_golson_h.html What coach in his right mind would name as a starter a kid who's talking to other schools. Next, how many times have we heard that competition for a position is good for a team? Doesn't naming a starter before fall camp even begins take the competition factor out of the equation? Let's stop trying to blame Kelly for Golson taking off. The kid hated school work and tried to take short cuts to get by. That's how he got his ass thrown out of school for a year while we had to put up with Tommy Rees. It's no wonder that he's at a "school" now where he probably won't have to see the inside of a classroom for the whole season. Raise you hand if you think he'll get a graduate degree. (mine's not up.)
After his horrendous year last year there was not a soul on earth who thought he would start this year at ND.
