This past weekend I traveled with the New York Jets on their road trip to Cleveland.

As we hung around at Hofstra University ( Jets HQ ) waiting for the buses to load, Cedric Houston came up to me, admiring my tie. His tie was draped over the shoulder of his $2000 suit. He asked me if I could tie his tie for him. I took his tie and tied it loosely on myself then handed it back to him. I told him that a man in his position should know how to do this himself and I made him watch me do it twice. It was like I was giving him the secret to eternal youth.

Later, in Cleveland at the hotel, he came up and shook my hand again and showed me his tie that this time he did himself. Needed a little work on length but I think he's got it! Nice kid.

That surprises me. I know that most of these kids grow up not knowing what a tie is... much less how to tie it. However, the Vol Walk attire includes a suit and tie. At Tennessee, tie tying is a 2 credit class.

Kidding aside, I think it would be a good idea to provide a 1 or 2 credit class along the lines of proper attire out there in the real world, including how to tie a tie. Perhaps include guidelines on business/professional protocol. As an old fart watching today's college graduates operate in my world, I think such a course would be very helpful.

He was nice kid, just didn't know how to tie his necktie. He learned from an expert this time.... twelve years of Catholic school education made me a "black belt" in the art.

Back in the late 90's , I had to do a HUD audit with a large FL CPA firm for one of my clients. I'm dressed up in a dark suit, red tie, sweat pouring down my face and these FL CPA's were dressed in shorts.

Another time about 5 years ago, I had another encounter with a Big 6 firm from Houston. Again I'm decked out in my suit and tie and these auditors including one of the partners were dressed in Khaki pants, loafers and button down shirts.

    Times are a changing!!

You don't see the suit and tie like we used to.

Nephew Brian has worked for Fidelity in Boston for around 10 years, doubt if he's ever worn a tie to work. He doesn't have client contact though.

I have a bank across from my office and they have auditors in there all the time, they are mostly young kids carrying a laptop and wearing slacks and a shirt. The women dress nicer than the men.

Jet coach Eric Mangini has established a suit and tie policy for the team and it's guests. There was no horsing around on the plane in either direction nor at the hotel. Curfew for the players on Saturday night was 10:00PM.

The Jets played badly but in the end it was a horrendous call that did them in. That was clearly a TD. I sat next to Chad Pennington on the flight home. I offered up to him that it was tough to lose a game in that fashion becuase I couldn't think of anything else to say. He responded that it was his fault that they lost and calls are a part of the game; he said if he had done his job that would never have been a factor. He was a very impressive guy.

    Pennington is a class act.

    George,

What a difference Mangini makes. Even when they lose, they look better.

PS This was intended to be a pun.

I am in the office equipment business and my principal line is Sharp Electronics. I’ve represented them since 1983. They are major sponsors of the Jets, along with almost all professional sports teams.

Sharp was invited to travel with the team and I was chosen as one of two dealer “guests”. There was one other dealer principal from Long Island, the eastern regional sales manager and national VP from Sharp. We rode with the team on the buses, flew with them and had rooms on the same floors as them. They mingled freely with us in their free time. I had breakfast with Marty Lyons whom I’m sure you remember. We had field passes for the entire pre-game and watched the game itself with Woody Johnson in his luxury box. On Saturday night the Jets marketing VP took the four of us out on the town in Cleveland. I didn’t have to reach in my pocket once the entire weekend.

It was a once in a lifetime experience.
