Charlie throws around his core values to recruits and everyone who will listen. I guess telling the truth isn't part of the "Core"??? Not so Core And to top it off there are rumors that Charlie will add this joker to his staff. If that happens... Wow. New DL coach?
If I've learned one thing from my years on this board, it's not to be so quick to pass judgement on or to criticize other members' programs, especially when you have an obvious agenda, lest it comes back to bite you in the ass.
I agree with Sid. Maybe theres more to the story. This gets back to the discussion about why these kids pick these schools. For the school or for the coach that recruited them.
Well what are HC supposed to do? I won't bother to go back in A&M archives to see if any A&M coach has left during the days immediately following NSD. Should Charlie have fired him the moment he indicated he was moving on? Should coaches who are thinking of taking other jobs quit their current job as soon as they have that thought? At ND our RB coach left, our QB coach left, both after NSD. One of our running back recruits, Dexter Williams, said he was surprised and hurt that Alford was leaving, but he also said that it wasn't going to impact his future at ND and that he was still looking forward to coming. Our QB recruit didn't seem to care that the QB coach who left for the Atlanta Falcons, Matt LaFleur, maybe it's because at ND the HC really coaches the QB's. We've already discussed Stan Drayton's leaving, and the reaction of the Ohio State kid, But really again what should Drayton have done? I don't know, I'm sure he totally believes in the Ohio State program and felt like even if he wasn't there another really good coach would take his place. I can understand the kids reaction to learning their position coach iwho recruited them isn't going to be there, it happens all over college football not just at Texas or Ohio State or Notre Dame. JFWIW: One of the Mods over on Inside Texas called one of the DL recruits who'd tweeted he was mad and then posted this. .. As far as that DL coach, well I can't find anything indicating that that DL Scott linked is in the running, not saying he won't get an interview since Strong knows him, but his name isn't coming up in discussions on InsideTexas. Look every year at this time there are kids who are going to a school that has a different HC than the one that recruited them or different coaches than recruited them. Scott just got a new job, I wonder how he'd feel if shortly after he took the job the guy who was his main contact/recruiter left the company and Scott found out that during his interview/recruiting visit(s) that guy already knew he was leaving. Quit the job? Do you guys think the NCAA needs a rule that says if your position coach leaves before you enroll for another job you have the option of getting out of your LOI and reopening your recruitment? What about kids who have shut down their recruitment to play for School X and late in Dec the HC takes another, better, job? Maybe the schools that were recruiting him have moved on and aren't interested or have spots anymore. Look at what happened to the kid from So.Carolina who was asked to grey shirt, he was pissed but it was late and his options were not very many at that time. Can't wait till Jim Harbaugh has an assistant coach leave UM, and most of these guys don't get job offers till late in the whole recruiting process. If they go to the NFL the vast majority of NFL staffs are being filled in Jan and Feb. In College mnost new HC take their jobs in early Dec and fill their staffs out in mid to late Dec and Jan. By then many kids are already too far down the road to back out.
Scott, if you pay attention to what's going on here, you can learn a lot from Terry. I certainly have. I admire Charlie Strong and consider him one of the outstanding coaches in college football. If Brian Kelly should leave, he would be my first choice. It's understandable that a kid would be upset losing the coach who recruited him, but if he commits only because of the coach, he has been shortchanged by his parents, his HS coach, and all those who participated in the process.
I'm not worried about coaches moving after signing day, that happens all the time. I was more interested in the fact that the guy who preaches about the moral high ground told the kid when directly asked a straight up lie. Maybe the kid exaggerated. Maybe not.
I got a little over righteous there, stuff happens between kids and coaches during recruiting. This year seems to be a year where kids are talking about it and coaches aren't looking so good right now. Recruiting it's not for the faint of heart, kids lie to coaches all the time, their parents lie to coaches and coaches lie. There is no fix for it. If Charlie knew the coach was leaving, and the kid directly asked him if his position coach was going to stay and he told the kid ..Yes Coach A is staying and will coach you when he knew that not to be true...then I'm very disappointed. There is no excuse for that. It's always the question, what did he know and when did he know it. How are we going to clean up recruiting? Can it even be done?
Sorry Terry, my post wasnt directly aimed at you. I know a few other guys who have totally beaten me down with the " Core values" bit. The way they talk, most other coaches are one step shy of the devil. When I saw that stuff about the kid being told the coach was staying I had a "Gotcha!" moment. For your sake I hope the replacement stuff was just rumor. That guy is bad news.
IMO it all comes down to why and for what the kid should commit. Too many kids do not receive intelligent, thoughtful advice and pin their decisions on their connection with the recruiters. That is wrong, dead wrong. Theyre not getting sound guidance from their parents or HS coaches. If I'm deciding on an employer, do I commit to a job because of the person who recruited and interviewed me? Or do I look at the company, its financial standing, its history, and its opportunities for a guy like me? Of course, it's the latter. The principle is the same in recruiting, but in this day and age of jumping on the newsworthy quotes, however far out in left field they may be, the real picture gets skewed and folks get their panties in a wad. That's how conversations like this one get started.
My personal belief is that this whole thing is overblown. I have, of course, never been recruited, but I am going to assume that the recruiters are selling their school, all the coaches, the teammates, the opportunity, and the whole package. Not "look at me, I'm such a nice guy and we get along so well...you'll just love having me alone to mentor you." Yeah, liking the position coach is part of the package, but still... The head coach leaving unexpectedly, along with his whole staff...that would be a different story.
