Corey, I think next year we will be better than this year but the year after that may be really good. We only lose 5 or 6 off of the 2 deep on defense this year (counting Collins). The first team offense loses a lot and that will be a problem, but a good defense is like a hot putter. It covers a lot of mistakes.
JoCo, in defense of the texters... The canned music really does suck. Along with the endless ads and promotions.
KP, Interesting. I always enjoy your takes because I can balance them vs the rest. Do you think Coker will be the guy? Stu, I don't blame you for texting
Many Texas fans are tired of the Ad's, the canned music and all other sorts of "game experience" enhancements at the Stadium. Long for the days when the Band and the Team were the focus.
TOK, Michigan fans feel the same way. I do not want to go to a college game and put up with an NFL like atmosphere. And to be fair, the last Packers game I went to had more of a college type atmosphere than the last M game i went to in AA.
Corey, Coker may be the guy but then we will only have him for one season. It would be nice if one of the younger guys could push him hard in the spring.
Interesting. Do you think there's too much of a lure to throw with a guy like Coker in the mix? Sometimes I wonder if it isn't better that Alabama simply have a game manager so they can return to 'run the damned ball' and make everyone happy here
Corey I agree with a lot of your points except I place more value on the BCS for cutting bowl tie ins and ensuring that the eventual BCS Champion had to win it on the field against top caliber competition. And again.... if TCU pounded Bama next Sat. in the also ran bowl it wouldn't mean much to me.....
Corey, I'm not sure what "game manager" really means. McCarron was a pretty good passer and he was called a game manager. He was a good enough passer to get the ball to Julio Jones enough to make Julio a 1st round draft choice. Sometimes it seems like if you have two good running backs and the quarterback doesn't throw interceptions he is automatically a "game manager". What I really hope for is a quarterback who is a good accurate passer, doesn't fumble and is smart enough to go to the right audible when needed. With our running backs, I don't really think he needs to be a great runner. Now having said all of that, if we have running backs like we have had the last 8 or 10 years, I hope we "run the damned ball" more too. 8)
Funny but you just described the anti-Jeff Driskel. Which is why his oh so loyal coach is now down the road in Auburn coaching defense.
KP, By game manager, I mean exactly what you described...but at the same time, they don't possess the super arm or all-world speed. They simply play within the confines of the offense and don't try to do too much. I'd argue that Julio Jones has more to do with being a 1st round draft choice than anyone else does. Game managers are more the JPW, Greg McElroy, or maybe even Jay Barker.. AJ is more high end than the 3 I mentioned. While he's not a super runner or one of those Dan Marino type passers, I think he can do well in the NFL if he sticks around long enough to really learn the game (ala Aaron Rodgers)
Jay Barker was the quintessential game manager and was not an offensive weapon. Our offense in 92 was undoubtedly a caretaker so that our defense could win the games for us. Barker should be the picture in the dictionary for "game manager", but it just seems like if a team has good running game that uses the running backs instead of the qb then the quarterback is almost automatically called a game manager when in fact he is also an offensive weapon.
Oh I'd agree with that and I don't think it's right. I think in our rush to quantify things, we get carried away with the labels. Like I said, I kind of have a hard time saying AJ was just 'a game manager' but at the same time I realize that he's no Elway, or even a Luck, Rodgers etc.. but he's a lot better than a Barker, JPW etc.
