""Good teams win games like that," Charlie Weis said of the UCLA victory. No argument here. Great teams, however, don't require miracle rallies to beat the Bruins or Michigan State, don't get outgained by Purdue, don't lead Stanford 14-3 at halftime and don't lose to 47-21 to anyone. Next game: Saturday vs. Navy" Ouch!
I guess he doesn't like Tenn for needing to kick a FG late to win, or Texas for needing a fumble after the Huskers had seemingly put the game away to get another chance at winning. I guess he didn't think Tenn deserved the NC in 1998 because they had to "get lucky" when the Ark QB dropped the ball without being hit just trying to run out the clock. I guess he didn't think the Longhorns were great because they were down 28-12 vs Okie State at half last year and had to have a furious comeback to win, or had to struggle to beat a Texas A&M team that everybody was beating handily. What a jerk.
Actually he did not change the ranking of Tex and Tenn this week. He has Tex at #5 and Tenn at #7.....UF at #4..
Great team? The only ones who put the "great team" lable were the pollsters who had ND #2 to start the year. Perhaps they weren't watching when the exact same secondary got toasted by OSU in the Fiesta Bowl last season. Perhaps they didn't notice that depth at ND is almost non existant with a junior class of 9 players (thanks Ty) No, the only ones who should be embarassed are the media pollsters who overrated ND to start the season and now seem to get off claiming that they're not living up to expectations. Oh and by the way ND got a bad call late in the game that gave UCLA 3 pts. GOOD teams overcome bad calls.
Great teams win good games like this one..... Dont underestimate UCLA they came out like they hadnt done all year lets hope they keep it up ...for the rest of their season.. and the Best team did win ... I was there ..... and as for the calls.we have already watched the tape 5 times at least ..... Questionable callbut then they were Pac-10 officials
It is <t>better to have harsh criticism than none at all.

The same people who bathed in Notre Dame's demise are the same people who couldn't keep themselves from reporting it.

I believe this reporter would contend that Ohio State's last NC team was a 'great' team, but they won 7 games by a 7 pts or less. That was a team that was continually saved by their defense and world class kicker.

Their season included such barn burders as:

Ohio State 23 Cincinatti 19 (UC was 7-7 led by ND's now DC)
Ohio State 19 Wisconsin 14 (UW was 8-6)
Ohio State 13 Penn State 7 (PSU was 9-4, all losses to good teams)
Ohio State 10 Purdue 6 (PU was 7-6)
Ohio State 23 Illinois 16 (Illinois was 5-7)

The other two tight wins were over very good Michigan and Miami teams. Toss in the good Penn State team and that's 3 tight wins over good teams, but 4 squeekers over mediocre to bad teams and they won an NC that year. On the field, of course.</t>
Corey, I'm with you...count me in the just win camp. Woody said it best, ".....victory in and of itself is decisive." Indeed the 02 Buckeye team you referenced had 5(!) of those games come down to the LAST PLAY! Just win baby....the rest takes care of itself - fook 'em!
