I assume that in the age of no secrets due to the Internet that we will eventually, and sooner rather than later, learn the fate of that 7.5M buyout.
Here's the $7.5 million buyout as I understand it. Gators pay 3 million McElwain pays 2 million over time. They get 2 million for a game in Gainesville between 2017 and 2020 We would have a game then anyway but are probably paying more than we would for another team, but the fans will also get to see a better team.
Congrats Bill, McElwain certainly knows the SEC having been with Saban at Alabama and has done a great job at CSU. I don't know what ofense he ran at CSU but it wasn't a uptempo Spread'em out at Alabama. So I expect that you can expect a Alabama like offense, with heavy emphasis on the run and a rock'em sock'em defense
Terry, Im not sure what he did at CSU either. Im not sure what he will do at UF, but I assume that he has developed some form of "the process" as his own. 8)
His MO at CSU was wide open offense, that is the major reason we went after him. I expect that our defensive staff may be largely retained. I am most optimistic.
I don't know much about this guy but his hiring seems to meet with national approval. Hopefully everyone is right.
Stu, I read that article. Then around the internet I found at least four more stating that either Florida got a good deal or it was win win for Florida and CSU. If you want them I could post links. In reading Forde's article you posted I get the distinct idea that he doesn't understand the time value of money and when he lists the $2 million for a game between 2017 - 2020 he did't even acknowledge that we would have to schedule a game with someone then regardless. I read that CSU got $1.5 to play Bama recently. Regardless Gator fans are happy with this hire and what we did to get McElwain so Forde's entitled to his opinion and I will enjoy sitting in the stands next year watching our new Gator offense.
Bill, My perception is that Foley played hardball and UF only had to pony up 3.5 million in cash buy-out. McElwain had to pay 2 mil and considering his raise and lucrative UF contract why not?
Guess we did AJ, but my understanding is that Nebraska tried to get in on the act but were in to late.
Yeah, he's a good coach but an ace recruiter. Sorry to see him go but glad he got an opportunity he wanted.
McElwain seems to be a colorful coach, a good recruiter and someone who plans to stay in Gator Country for awhile. I think you have a winner.
This is all guesswork but looking at his offenses at Alabama, Colorado State and going back to Fresno State, I think you're going to be a team similar to Spurrier in that you throw the ball all over the yard but the power running game will be your bread and butter when you're great.
Nice article about the new coach..... I hope this guy knows what he is talking about: http://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/florida-football/film-study-floridas-hiring-mcelwaine-spells-trouble-sec/
