Not now Scott, I'm headed out with my "Hell No" sign and gonna protest with the rest of the NU faithful......you thought Ferguson, MO had issues.... TIME FOR YOU TO GO HARVEY PEARLMAN
Ok, I'm back. All that really happened during the protest was a couple of Wisconsin plated cars got accidentally torched....nothing else to report. I'M REALLY CURIOUS AS TO WHAT JOCO'S INPUT ON THIS WILL BE.... The more I find out about this (Riley) guy, the more I'm intrigued... The common theme with him right now is he has done a "Keeping the Boat Afloat" job at a place where it's listed as the #1 or # 2 worst places you could try and build a winning FB team.....I'll be keeping an eye out for his staff he plans on building at NU.......kinda curious.....
Didn't Taylor go to Lincoln North Star? LINCOLN, Neb. -- A high school employee who let fired Nebraska coach Bo Pelini use the auditorium to meet with his former players will be billed $262.50. Pelini was fired Sunday, and several of his players have since declared their support for the fiery coach and their disappointment at the decision to dismiss him. On Thursday, Nebraska announced that Oregon State coach Mike Riley has been hired as Pelini's replacement. The unidentified staffer is acquainted with Pelini and let him and the players gather Tuesday night at Lincoln North Star High School. School district spokeswoman Mary Kay Roth says the staffer didn't go through the appropriate channels and didn't inform his principal. The bill for the four hours of use covers custodial and utilities costs. According to the Lincoln Journal Star, an online fund was started to help the staffer pay the fine. More than $560 had been raised over 21 hours.
Mike Riley played for Coach Paul Bryant at Alabama. He took himself out of the running early during the coaching search after Mike Shula was let go at Alabama. I guess I should be thankful for that.
Jim just got home I am sure he will be on later however I told him at dinner about the Oregon coach going to you... and all he said was WHY would he go there...... apparently he has turned down USC twice and even UCLA . Jim likes him.....
Yes he did Doc.....my youngest Chase is a sophomore there now........ You can actually rent the area in question...the problem here is that Bo was friends with the school official that didn't go through proper channels to schedule the visit.......there's a fee to do so....for janitorial and electric usage, etc., but was obviously circumvented due to time constraints....no big deal in my mind.....but the fact that they had a online donation for it is peculiar to me when Bo is getting $900 an hour, based on a 40 hour work week, in a unemployed status, that he didn't pull his wallet out to begin with.
Ed Orgeron's name being tossed around as a possible staff addition to to Riley's new team......considered a hell of a recruiter, especially in the SE part of the country.....hhhhmmmmmmm......
AJ, Riley is a hell of a coach. I am guessing KP said they should be thankful because they wound up replacing Shula was Saban. I find this hire curious. He's a great coach, but he absolutely loves the Pacific Northwest and specifically Oregon. He's turned down other big time offers from other big time schools. Maybe at the age of 61, he figures it is time to take one big shot at the big prize?
AJ, It's just my opinion, but I think you guys just hired one helluva coach. He could have had almost any coaching job in America over the years, but he played HS ball in Corvallis, Oregon and he loves it there. Maybe he's moving now, because his kids are grown, I don't know, but I'm glad to see him make that move. Among coaches nationally, he's regarded as one of the best. He's the son of a coach and it shows. He's been at the top of everyone's wish list for a long time, but nobody could pry him out of Corvallis. How in the world did Nebraska pull this off? He's been the head coach of the San Diego Chargers and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers among others. Read this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Riley I don't know if this guy is in the same category as Saban, Holtz or Pete Carroll, but he just might be. Get ready to return to a pro style offense and defense. That's what's coming and his players love him. You got a good one.
The one thing that makes us all nervous here in the Motherland....... "Riley was hired as the head coach at Oregon State in 1997 to replace Jerry Pettibone, who had resigned at the end of the 1996 season. Riley's initial contract was a five-year deal at $185,000 per year. In the Beavers' first season under Riley, they posted a record of 3–8. This was a difficult season for Riley as he attempted to run his NFL-style offense with players recruited by Pettibone to run the wishbone triple-option
AJ, Yeah Alabama had talked to Riley, and he apparently said no thanks, he was happy at Oregon. Eventually we hired Saban. That move has worked pretty well for us.
He's going to run an NFL offense. That's what he does. He could have had jobs at half the schools out there, including USC, UCLA, Alabama, Tennessee etc. He's turned away many NFL inquiries as well. He was happy at Oregon State. What changed? I don't know. This is quite a coup for the Huskers. They've pulled off the impossible. Just realize that he's one of those guys who does what he believes and everyone else will have to adjust to him. You're going to run an NFL offense. That means power running combined with a short passing game and a physical defense. That's what's going to happen and he'll have much better athletes at Nebraska than he ever had at OSU...
He's in the midst of putting together his staff. He just sent out a feeler for Kevin Steele, former NU LB coach who's now with Bama, and the guy responsible for finding Tommie Frazier. Ed Orgeron and Scott frost are also mentions on his radar. I'm really intrigued by Orgeron. Coach, during his presser, he did say that he huddles and goes under center, so maybe he does run an NFL style O (His words), but he also said that he adapts to the players, not the other way around, but he was also emphatic about the QB position and his belief that it all starts there. One of the things I caught during his podium time was when the question was asked about how much he really knew about NU FB, his answer was "Well, I remember standing on the side line in the '72 OB watching Johhny Rodgers run all around the field on us that night"....that brought a chuckle to the crowd.
You're going to be a run first team in a proset formation. One thing I always appreciate about Riley is that he maximizes the talent that he has on hand.
