How can this guy make negative comments about one of the most academically prominent state university football programs in the country? He obviously didn't do his homework. Looks like he's the guy who should be fired. No offense to Bobda.

Well if you go to this page...and chose the following options.

    https://web1.ncaa.org/GSRSearch/exec/homePage

    1. Conference - Big 10
    2. Sport - Football
    3. Year- 2013-14

You get the GSR report for all the Big10 teams.

As you might expect Northwestern leads the Big10 in GSR at 97, while Michigan, Michigan State, and Wisconsin are tied for the worst GSR's in the Big 10.

However if you use APR then UM is doing much better, and in fact made a big jump in the latest rankings. They are #36, and actually ahead of Notre Dame, Rice, and Vanderbilt in this metric. Which of course makes me wonder if this metric is valid, but never the less. Hoke is correct that they made a big jump.

Well he's apologized. :) I think he learned a lesson here with regards to politics and football in the Academic environment. A lot of big boosters/contributors love football and want to win at football and don't like people who aren't football people like the Univ President talking down about football. Not just at UM, but at any big time football program.

Schissel came to M from Brown several months ago. I wonder with what he has had to deal with in the past few months if he is now mulling over the wisdom of his choice. He was tossed right away into the deep end of the swimming pool.

When he came here, I doubt if he had a full appreciation of the level of fanaticism that Michigan alums have for the football program and the "accommodations" that are made academically in universities with both prominent academic and athletic reputations to maintain its revenue sports.

Given what had taken place in the past regarding M's basketball program and, to a lesser degree, its football programs, I would be happy is he truly does shift to some degree the balance at the school to academics and away from a win at all costs mentality.

Based on the reasoned posts by Terry and Bobda, I have amended the title of this topic to reflect a softer critique. :?

It has to be somewhat of a cultural shock to move from an Ivy League school where athletics don't involve scholarships and the alumni don't live and die with the football team. Just ask Joel the last time he even went to a Brown game.

At Texas I can guarantee that the President better think the football program is a high priority or he'll be out on his ass. Big Cigar donors like the Longhorns to win. That's why Mack Brown went from hero to zero pretty quick.
