Got to disagree with Doc. The defender didn't touch the ball. Looks like a fumble all the way. If Leak didn't try to pull it back, then I would say incomplete pass., but with the defender bearing down on him, he had no intention of completing his throw.
Thanks for your objectivity Terry that some are so incapable of around here. IC....you are pretty idealistic in that you trust everyone connected to collegiate sports...even if they have a vested interest in the game. The history of collegiate sports...especially for a rare few of those connected to Auburn and Alabama in the fairly recent past has proven that not all are so trustworthy out there and some will stop at nothing to win. I have posted many posts recently about how objectivity could be gained in NCAA football officiating with at least the one top Quality Control official doing a game that doesn't know or associate regularly with the rest of the regional crew and who is tested out as having no ties or vested interest in the game he officiates. Again...you don't read my posts here on the Auburn game where I say that UF screwed the pooch on this one. I can say however that I don't agree with Al Ford's son going to Auburn and having him be the replay official for the UF game without infering that was the difference in the game. You seem unwilling to accept that.
I don't think anybody denies that his arm was moving forward, but does his intention over rule the fact that his arm moved forward and he lost the ball? I can't tell if he stopped his forward motion and...ie like he was pumping the ball if you know what I mean... but it seems to me that regardless of his intention (could the ref really know that in real time?) he did lose the ball with forward arm motion. I posted this on Inside Texas and the group was divided some said incomplete pass and some said fumble. With the Penn State video last week they were almost 100% for no pass interference. Possibly we need higher speed cameras to be able to see more frame by frame. I don't know. I just know there are seemingly a lot of problems comming up with the replay system. Maybe it's just training I don't know. Also did you see my post where there hasn't been an overturn of an officals ruling on the field in B12 play when the coach has challenged? That seems odd or B12 coaches are really bad at knowing when to challenge.
I do ! His arm was clearly moving down! If you look at his hand, it is perpendicular to the ground. That's a tuck, a fake throw and a fumble imho. He was trying to fake out a defender who didn't bite. He pumped once and looked like he was trying to pump it again. It was a clear fumble imho. His arm is moving DOWN, not forward. Look at the ball. Which way is it pointed? I think this is what the official saw.
are you kidding me? <t>seriously, are you kidding me?<br/> <br/> i am 'afraid' to look at the youtube? will it burn my eyes out? or is this some childish 'calling out of my manhood' that will result in my manhood shrinking somehow if i don't follow the leader and watch the clips. i've seen the clips a hundred times. you seem to forget, i live in hardcore SEC country. they show college football clips in lieu of children's cartoons in these parts and the preacher's sermons somehow always seem to tie back into 'God's plan' that somehow ties back into proper blocking assignments. I'm surrounded by this crap man. I have seen that damn clip more times than you, and unlike you, I don't sit around replaying it over and over on youtube while engaging myself in a backslapping tirade of self-enlightenment all the while acknowledging my own personal greatness for clearly being able to see that which others cannot.<br/> <br/> My opinion on the play runs right along with AJ's. <br/> <br/> Using your own retarded guidelines for selecting officials, I would be the biggest USC homer EVER. Anyone who knows me that I hate USC so much that you don't know any two people combined who hate a team as much as I hate the Trojans. I've literally rooted for their bus to crash. I've had friendships end over people who took the opportunity to play them. I still can't stand my only living grandparent because he's a Trojan. Yet, by YOUR criteria, I would be giving them an unfair advantage.</t>
Yeah well this guy's son went to Auburn so we really don't know if he loves Bama and hates Auburn now do we? I only propose we take the temptation out of the equation.
I can certainly see the case for the fumble as well as the case for the incomplete. I'm just glad I didn't have to make the call. The important thing is that there was enough time to overcome the call wheter it was fumble or incomplete. If it was incomplete, UF get to try the FG, and Auburn can block or UF can miss or Auburn can score right back at them on the next possesion...same for UF. Terry
Agree, that's a tough judgement call to make. What fuels the controversy is the ' Arm going forward rule" The announcer's did not elaborate. I could be wrong, but I think that there is a distinction to be made, especially since the defender did not touch the ball or arm. If not, then it's an incomplete pass.
The arm going forward rule is the only thing that could dictate this to have been a fumble because to me he simply lost control of the ball. One thing for sure is that the defender did not knock it out of his hand.
Here's the NCAA rule that I picked up from the internet. After reading the above it is clear the intent of the rule is that if the QB's arm is coming forward it will be considered an incomplete pass. Unless the above is incorrect I frankly do not understand how Mr Ford in the replay booth could make the call he did, or how the SEC could claim it was the correct call. It's over, but it was a terrible call on the part of the replay official and the SEC. On the field things happen fast and you can understand a mistake, but I don't see how from the replay booth. An interesting development in the BCS polls is that Florida is ahead of Auburn in every computer poll. Have a great evening.
How do they ever get a game started down there in the land of cotton with all this intrigue? Has any SEC game EVER been decided by the players? Are all southern football officials on the take? Like Boss Hogg? Is it possible to find an official who is not related to anyone? Would that make him an extra terrestrial? Just a few questions..... :?:
Thanks for the clarification Bill. It's apparent that Al Ford...aka Boss Hog....was either ignorant of the rule or just plain ignorant or made to be ignorant by his personal bias. In any event he is an ignorant ass. Maybe you should send this rule description to the SEC office because they obviously do not have an understanding of the rules.
(Sigh)...I might as well weigh in on this discussion. Sat. night I thought it was an incorrect call...but so very close it would be tough to make initially or to overrule on the replay. I still think the same thing.
That's more or less what the head of officials in the SEC said Stu, not enough evidence. But what I'm hoping will be my last post on this as I'm ready to move on........ I don't see how when reading that rule, and the officials should know the rule, it should have been called or not over turned.
SEC Office has made an offical statement that the call was correct? Did they cite a particular rule, like the one that Bill posted? This is one of those cases where it would be interesting if the SEC Head of Officals or the SEC commissioner would have a press conference and show the tape and show where and why the particular rule was applied and why it was the correct call. Doubt that happens as I'm sure every conference commissioner likes to 1) protect his officals if he can 2)when he can't just move on as fast as possible. Very tough call though. Terry
MCG, I'm sure the SEC has the rule but the head of officials came out and said there was not enough evidence to overturn the rule. We now need to concentrate on winning out and going to the SEC Championship game. I'm amazed that the Gators are still ahead of Auburn in the computer polls.
