Lawsuit filed against the NCAA for capping player compensation at the value of a scholarship. I'm all for players recieving the full cost of attending college, which would result in a stipend of some sort to cover the things that are not books/tuition/room/board. But this thing is going to result in the killing off of college athletics as we know it now and spawn more lawsuits by the kids whose sports are dropped and lose their scholarships because their sports lose money. Another Lawsuit
All this time I've been bitching, this is what I've been bitching about. I don't want this, and never have. This is a very real threat. The road to this destination has been paved by greed and arrogance. I rarely say this, but I hope the NCAA finds a way to win this suit. I would have to imagine that they can argue they set the wage, but if they do that, then you'll have to recognize this as a 'profession' which is a slippery slope. However they go about it, I'm hoping like the dickens that they can continue to control the compensation level otherwise it will kill college sports. There is a disingenuous nature to most all of these things. Starting with Title IX right on up to this POS. They've taken an administrative role of enforcement without ever actually reviewing how it all really impacts the college student. They didn't care, because they're just revenue. It's that treatment of the student-athlete as a cash cow instead of a person that's led to this.. This sucks.
If the player's scholarship is "compensation" then they should be taxed like other employees. The fact is, they are exempt under our tax rules. Now if they want to change the rules they may learn that the only one coming out better is the lawyers. (It's a shame that 95% of the profession ruins it for everyone.)
I had to read that twice! I certainly hope your theory holds. While I am not a fan of a lot of NCAA rules, treating a college scholarship as income certainly has it's downside for those getting the scholarship.
