This is Derek Jeter's announcement of his retirement following the 2014 season. Whether or not you like the Yankees, this is a very worthwhile read. It represents all that is good about professional sports. How ironic in 2014 to, 1) have both extremes, the bad (Alex Rodriguez) and the good (Derek Jeter), on the same team, and 2) have that team be the greatest franchise in the history of MLB, the Yankees. http://www.sportingnews.com/mlb/sto...d=maing-grid7|main5|dl2|sec1_lnk2&pLid=442224
I guess that means he won't have to play with ARod again? It is a nice story and I wish him well this season but refuse to root for the Yankees to win the World Series.
He's been a great player for sure and a 1st ballot HOF no doubt. But he's still a Yankee!! Good story though.
Make room on the wall for #2 at The Stadium. That completes the set. No one will wear a single digit in pinstripes again. I suspect he will also be a permanent fixture in Monument Park and then on to Cooperstown in five years. Not one hint of controversy in 20 years. Players like this come along maybe once in a generation.
Some yahoo on ESPN was talking about how Jeter was so great because of the team around him that Tejada, ARod in his prime, and Nomar were just as good at SS as Jeter and if plugged into the Yankees during that time they still would have 5 rings. Said the real reason Jeter has 5 rings is Mariano Rivera.
 In his prime there was no one better than Jeter. Not Honus Wagner...not Rabbit Maranville...not the Wizard of Oz...nobody.
The Yankees have a few special legends. Men, who aren't just great players but also men who hold themselves to a higher standard of dignity. Jeter has placed his name right along Gehrig, DiMaggio and the others. 1st ballot HOF and the best 2 way, 5 tool SS I ever saw.
Jeter has always played his best when the stakes were the highest, unlike the other three mentioned above.
The Yankees use a tape of BOB SHEPPARD's voice ( he used to be the field announcer for Yankees for 60 years until he passed 4 years ago)..NOW BATTING FOR NY..NUMBER 2.. DEREK JEETAHHHH...JEETAHHHH. Ill bet the Red Sox at some point in the season borrow that tape and use it at Fenway.
The Bombers close the season with a three game set at Fenway. That should be some weekend. When he announced his decision yesterday, tickets for those games started skyrocketing. They are now well over a thousand each, I read this morning. <iframe width="640" height="360" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/ydIcC1_No8M?feature=player_detailpage" frameborder="0"></iframe>
