MCG, The second clip is not as good as the first, do you really think that the defender did not hit this receiver before the ball got there? Being an Alabama fan and an SEC fan I don't have a dog in this hunt and I played DB in high school so I usually defend them but this one was a penalty.
KP, If you watch the second clip, note that the defender gives the receiver a huge check 13 yards past the line of scrimmage before the pass is even thrown. I think that is what AJ is referring to. Isn't it illegal to check the receiver except for 5 yards from the line of scrimmage?
No I don't think college has illegal contact. If he is not holding and the ball is not in the air then no foul
Tom and kp = 7 on this board who see the penalty.......Sorry, AJ, we can't count you because you do have a dog in this hunt.
Hey MCG what's the solution? Do you review ever play, every spot, every foul? Do you substitute the official in the booth's judgement for the guys on the field. Do we have guys on the field at all? Do we have enough cameras to watch every O lineman so that every holding call can be reviewed? I've seen views from a camera that show nothing and then a view from a totally different angle shows something completely different. Certain penalties like foward progress, foot in bounds, TDs and fumbles are plays that can possibly be reviewed. At some point you either have to have officials on the field or hidden officials "up in the booth."
Jarrell doesn't qualify as Austin...you live in the sticks with Cows!! Austin people drive beemers, drink Starbucks, eat bagels, play golf, worry about the snail darter in Barton Creek, think Ronnie Earl is da bomb, ... Terry
MCG, I think that I am seeing a pattern here. Is it that you look for calls that go against the Gators and the underdog in non-Gator games? This is not a dig, but a legit observation.
Here's a good interpretation of the rules by a high school ref. I recomend that MCG read this carefully not just for the play in question but for the fundamentals of officiating. Stu, college does not have the 5 yard rule. It does have an illegal contact rule. I think it could have been called 2 ways. More often than not , a DB will be flagged with a reach around from behind play. Even if one thinks it's a questionable call, it makes up for the pushoff 6'6" Wheelwright did in scoring a TD against a smaller defender who was fronting him. http://66.218.69.11/search/cache?p=...illegal+contact&d=GFsoYCQ8NloW&icp=1&.intl=us
A few on this board see the penalty but obviously many others see it as something that should have been a no-call in that situation. "Certain penalties like foward progress, foot in bounds, TDs and fumbles are plays that can possibly be reviewed" Gipper you are getting warm in that what I propose includes potentially game changing plays like this one. In review this may have been inconclusive enough not to be overturned and if that was the case then so be it. The reviewed penalty calls need to be significant to the game's outcome. An offsides in the first half for instance may not get a review unless it negated a huge gain, TD or a fumble, int. etc. Tom, what I want to see in college football is a sport where huge, season defining games are not influenced by a questionable or wrong call by a referee. It's a simple desire to see the sport that I love to watch the most be unaffected by poor judgement and possible bias by the zebras. I would like the integrity of an important game in college football to be 100% whole and that game to be completely and soley decided by the play on the field. I know it's asking a lot but our present system is totally inadequate and that in unacceptable to me. Bill....you must like going to the Outback Bowl .....a lot. When Penn State get's a second chance...a breath of life to defeat Minn. when there was no life that call had better be right. The beauty of CFB is that in competitive leagues like the SEC one loss can mean the difference between the Cap One Bowl and the Sugar Bowl so therefore I want it right. I want it clean and with no influence by anyone other than the players and coaches. The refs have no friggin place in the equation.
And it was gotten right...how is Penn State supposed to feel if pass interference occurs and it doesn't get called? Have you no sympathy for teams that suffer big losses because of no-calls that should have been made? I don't think that you really believe that. I certainly don't. The refs play an extremely important part in the equation of making sure of the integrity of the game, and despite the whining of the fans (myself included) they usually get it right and are constantly looking for ways to get it done better.
MCG, I guess I have a little trouble understanding your comment about I must like going to the Outback Bowl a lot. What the heck does that have to do with this topic? Last year we lost to Alabama, LSU and S. Carolina, just how would anything have changed so that we would have played in a higher bowl? I'm kind of confused.
must not ....arrrrrrrrrrrrrgh....must not given into ..........arrrrrrrrrrgh....must control urge..... phew. never mind.
