Penalty calls in college football should absolutely be reviewable. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z-gdpX9okpM If this is pass interference then I am as rich as Gonzo......claims to be. You can't sit there and tell me with a straight face that this miscall did not truly determine...not merely alter...the outcome of the Minn-PSU game. It came on 4th down in OT and gave PSU new life when in actuality it was a great defensive play. The bad call was just as game determining as a fumbled ball ruled the wrong way and it should have been overturned. Why have review in any capacity if refs can just call B/S penalties that wrongly determine a game's outcome?
The defender's body quite clearly hits him before the ball gets there. His helmet hits the receiver in the shoulder. He got there early...the call was correct.
I gotta go with Stu, the guy got there just a fraction too early. It was almost a great play by the DB.
What are you talking about, MCG? The defender's left shoulder clearly hits the receiver in the right side of his back below his pads before the ball arrives. This is obvious pass intereference. There is no doubt about it at all. If this is the type of play that causes you to whine about refs, your credibility on this subject has just taken a big hit.
I haven't been on as much lately, so the video may have already been discussed, but did anyone notice who posted it on YouTube?
The defender get's his right arm in to deflect the ball. Mandel sees it that way anyhow.... "Stewart, why does everyone (yourself included) think that the pass-interference call against Minnesota in last week's game against Penn State was a terrible call? -- Dave Bielen, Danville, Pa. When you say "everyone," do you mean "anyone who doesn't have a vested interest in Penn State"? Because I find it hard to believe that anyone with a nonpartisan perspective could watch this replay and conclude that the defender did anything besides break up a pass."
He's wrong...look at the video you posted. His helmet clearly makes impact while the ball is still in the air and has not arrived. The call was correct.
It gets back to a suggestion I made in an earlier topic about the need for a completely pre-qualified Quality Control ref who could review every single call that truly changes the outcome of a game. It could get ridiculous on penalties so maybe these reviews on penalties anyway would be limited to say 4 a game tops and the QC ref would have to determine what merited review as far as importance. In any event he could still have to make a judgement call but at least everyone would understand that this guy had no ties to the conference or schools involved and should be unbiased and therefore qualified to make the call.
I posted that video over on NDNation and there was not one guy who thought it was pass interference. For what it's worth. I do think it was close and maybe its one of those things that when you see it in slo mo you can say that while he might have made contact that he made such a great play with his right hand while not hanging on with his left arm that it's a good no call. In real time on the field it's so close he probably assumed that he couldn't make that play with his right hand without hanging on with the left arrm. B10 refs are awfull is all that I know. Terry
Close but <t>In slo-mo it is easy to spot pass interference. Defender's helmet contacts receiver's back while the ball is in the air. Looks like a good call to me.</t>
I am amazed that the Big 10 office was so quick to disavow the obvious correct call. Four unrelated and objective views on this board saw the same thing. The Big 10 office is dead wrong. It sounds like one of McG's close relatives works there. If I was the ref who is victimized by this travesty, I'd raise hell.
TOK, Big 10 refs might be bad, but they got that one correct. I'm with Sid and Stu on this one. The contact was obvious, apology or not. It doesn't make any difference at all that it's only apparent in slow motion. Many things in this world are only evident when viewed in slow motion but that doesn't mean that they don't exist!?! Terry
What is a "good no call"...waiving the rules...not making the proper call 'cause it wouldn't be politically correct...being a chicken-sh!t 'cause you don't want to make a correct call that might be contraversial. No, in real time it probably looked like he hit him before the ball got there...which HE DID.
You can't get anything by Rick. AJDLION is me. Here's another angle of the play. Notice how the receiver gets walloped by the DB and pushed forward. That's not incidental contact. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iQia6urXWcg&mode=related&search
