Dang, Vic was a great guy here on the Skybox. Didn't post all that much but it was clear that Vic had depth to him. Rest in Peace Vic.
I did not know Vic, but one of his son's tribute speaks volumes. He must have been an interesting and successful individual.
Victor was a true gentleman. He never had a bad word in the 20 years I have been in contact with him. RIP Vic. jif
Very sad to read this news, and I share the sentiments pressed in the prior posts. The words of his son describing him as the best role model he ever could have had are a wonderful tribute to Vic.
The worst Christmas continues... I've exchanged a lot of emails with Vic over the last 20 years and he was a wonderful man. I can't remember him saying a single harsh word about anyone. He held strong opinions; but never tried to push his own views on anyone else. He was a smart guy: Michigan State and Notre Dame Law School, but he never tried to one-up anyone. He was secure in his own intellect and seemed amused by those of us who tried to come off cleverer than we really were... He was old school, without being old-fashioned. He could be trusted. Even in private emails, he gave only the bare outline of his career as an FBI agent. He knew J. Edgar Hoover personally and spent a great deal of time in Iran. That's it. They weren't called "The Greatest Generation" for nothing. They were great, because they had guys like Vic Matous. I will miss his friendship and advice...
I really have nothing to add. You guys may not have said it all, but it certainly could not be said better. I'll miss Vic. Even when you knew he may have shared you opinion on things, he was always measured and refrained from the idiocy. I have to admit that I have tempered about 99% of my posts regarding Hoover's FBI strictly out of respect for Vic. I don't know if I'd put this down as the worst Christmas. We've lost some great men this holiday season, but the world is a better place because they were in it. Those men have set the table for the rest of us to carry on.
