these things are always so silly, I usually don't even bother reading them. I don't know why I didn't do so with this one, but since I wasted my time, I'm going to waste yours.

    Dear SI,

Are you out of your g** da#% mind? How in the world do you make Alex Rodriguez your other SS along with Honus Wagner, when 'ARod' isn't even the starting SS for his current club?

I would submit to you a name so great at that position that he re-defined how the position was played until 'Generation Andro' invaded the game. A player so great that he can't be accurately guaged by the trite stats of BA, HR and RBIs, because in order to really take into acct what a great SS he was, you would have to look at how many hits, runs, doubles and SBs he took away from the other team. The man covered everywhere on the field from the 5/6 hole all the way around the bend to the 4 middle gap and even the shallow to mid OF from foul pole to centerfield like a wet blanket. A player so great that he not only provided for your team, he took away from the other.

Baseball is not a game of style points. Either you score, or you don't. There are no polls to play for, no 'clock' to beat. You must beat your opponent who will have at least as many chances, if not more, than you to outperform you to win the game. And as the history of this game has taught us, you win games with defense first.

    That player is Ozzie Smith

    Sincerely,

    Joe Fan

    ps
when picking a team and one member's selection hi-light is 'broke modern color barrier' than its time to get a new selection criteria. The last time I checked, runs weren't given out or removed for color of skin.

    pps

The selection of McGraw as manager is fantastic. However, I am fairly certain he would have the same opinion as myself regarding the #2 SS on this team.

The Wiz! Not a bad player that's for sure. But I'd have to go with Ernie at SS myself. Mr. Cub, Let's play 2!!

    Corey,

What do you expect from SI, that pandering rag? Nothing they do or say has any credibility. The only smart thing they've done in the past 25 years is to hire Commish.

P.S. Ernie Banks is my #1 all-time SS.

I believe that John McGraw would probably choose Rabbit Maranville as the greatest SS ever. The rabbit was a magician on and off the field who would often play without a glove, even as late as 1930. Nearly every player who ever saw him said that he was the greatest.

PS. Honus Wagner made as many as 60 errors per year. He made the HOF as a hitter.
