Corey, they better get the commercials in early...the ND detractors and Purdue fans will be gone early in the broadcast. :? This should be a bloodletting that only Tim could love.
Stu.... if it gets out of hand it will be like Sunday mornings when I was growing up in Jacksonville, Fl. in the 60s waiting on the Florida Football Show and watching NOTRE DAME FOOTBALL Sunday Replay with those shiny gold helmets and a boring.... ass kicking of the week going on....
Main thing with this game is to not just get a win, but to get a really good win to sort of heal the psyche of the fans!!
ND <t>ANY win over Purdue is good but I'm looking for ND to score at least 50 and Purdue less than that.</t>
not ND related but serious question.. Will the Texas A&M vs Alabama game be on the NFL Network, now? ok I was kidding.. serious question.. the ND game is not regional? It's the national prime time game?!?! I know we've been talking about this, but I just got around to looking it up and confirming it. I find this shocking even if we were both top 25 teams.. We do have some close games though.. so maybe some on field drama will be a nice change for those wanting to watch college football this weekend. Still, UCLA-Nebraska looks to be a war. That was chippy last year. Oregon-UT looks to be fun.. great weekend coming up!
I'm sure when the schedule was made up, ND was a possible 2-0 team and ABC wasn't counting on Purdue being gutted by Cincy. The best laid plans of mice and men....
Speaking of that Gip... what do you think our offensive game plan will be? Will our offensive game plan matter if the defense doesn't show up?
I expect that we'll try to run as often as we can. I expect that we'll see 3 backs get the majority of the carries and Kelly will find out who joing Amir in the rotation. When they jam the box I hope Koyak gets some touches. On D I hope our D line makes the LBs job easy enough for them to handle.
You should worry. I thought that they took plays off vs Temple. Like you I'm hoping they don't vs Purdue. (They've got to do it for Tim)
Purdue used the Temple game plan...made it a game. Irish, lead by Tommy Ballgame, came out and did what they had to win the game. Cam McDaniel looks to me like our best back, runs hard seems to have a nose for going forward, picks up the blitz.
I tried to tell you guys, but no one listened. Unfortunately, it took the entire first half for them to recognize it. Fortunately, we played hard enough on both sides of the ball in the second half to earn the win. Tommy Ballgame. Love it!
No leadership on defense Sid, Carlo/Fox are terrible and will continue to be abused by any QB who can get the ball out quick. Anybody notice what that Temple QB has done since he didn't have to face Carlo/Fox? Nada. I predict Rob Henry will also come back to earth when he faces inside backers who can actually cover somebody. BTW: Class move by Tommy Ballgame after his interview with Heather Cox...he sought our Rob Henry to congratulate him on a great game.
BTW big heart medals for TJ jones for the gutty catch at the goal line...he fought that Purdue back for the ball and got his foot down. And DaVaris Daniels for being a stud big WR.
I never hear about Kona and I wonder if the loss of Springman hurts more than we realize. We just don't seem to have that rotation of fresh legs in the trenches. This is our 3rd opponent in a row that basically wants no part of our freshman LB working field side which is just amazing. Our MLBs struggle against the crossing route underneath and it is something even Te'o struggled with until his senior season. We're still not getting the pressure we need though. Rees may be all class, but Jesus is he maddening to watch. Will GA3 finally realize that fumble is exactly why he can't run straight up and down? Probably not. McDaniel ran with heart tonight and that's what we needed from someone.. heart. We got it on the big TD and McD's runs. That's about it. Call it a hangover game, we better be better against Sparty.
 1. Tip of the cap to Purdue. They're always out-manned, but never out-classed. Those people have no fear. 2. BTW- Rob Henry, like the Temple QB, is a former WR... 3. Every opposing coach has the same game plan against Tommy Rees: stack the box; overload the front; cover the TEs with LBs and dare the Irish to throw over the top. They're betting the farm that Tommy can't run or throw deep. It almost worked. On the bomb to DaVaris Daniels the Boilers were in a Cover One, with the only safety on the other side. They were covering him man-to-man with a CB who was half a foot smaller! They had gotten away with that all day before that play... 4. Not everybody pooped the bed on defense today. Jaylon Smith, Bennett Jackson, Cole Luke, and Ishaq Williams looked good... 5. How is Sheldon Day? I saw him limp off, but I didn't see a report on his condition. We need that guy. 6. Cam McDaniel has won the short yardage/ball control job, but the other TB jobs are wide open. We still don't have a break-away or every down back... 7. DaVaris Daniels and T.J. Jones are a great pair down field if we can get the ball to them... 8. As Charlie might have said, I think our coaches got out-schemed today...
1. Tip of the cap to Purdue. They're always out-manned, but never out-classed. Those people have no fear. You could tell on that 1st series that Purdue was jacked and the success of that first drive fueled them all night. 2. BTW- Rob Henry, like the Temple QB, is a former WR... Same skill set, athletic and got the ball out quickly to quick recievers. Before the season everybody aknowledged that this team was only going as far on offense as the running game would allow us. Tommy has done his part in the passing game, but the running game is awful. Don't know if it is the backs, the OL, the play calling, whatever, but it's awful and until it's fixed we'll have to rely on Rees and he's not good enough to carry us. Now if only he were mobile and quick like the 3 QB's we've faced....oh yeah that's Golson. He really screwed his teammates with whatever it was he did to get booted. 4. Not everybody pooped the bed on defense today. Jaylon Smith, Bennett Jackson, Cole Luke, and Ishaq Williams looked good... Jaylon esp is a joy to watch, Kevarie Russel has no clue this year...don't understand why he was good last year. On Purdue's last TD he never realized who it was he was supposed to cover, so he covered nobody. 5. How is Sheldon Day? I saw him limp off, but I didn't see a report on his condition. We need that guy. No kidding, Sheldon Day is our best DL right now. 6. Cam McDaniel has won the short yardage/ball control job, but the other TB jobs are wide open. We still don't have a break-away or every down back... The next tackle that GAIII breaks will be his first. I will say that Kelly learned not to throw him the ball overhand, did you notice how everything was an underhanded shovel pass when they tried to get him outside. Carlisle will be good but he does need a little space if they are going to run him inside he's not Robt Hughes or Jonas Gray. Still haven't seen freshmen RB's enough to know if they are ready or not. 7. DaVaris Daniels and T.J. Jones are a great pair down field if we can get the ball to them... 2 best players on offense, hands down. If we had a running game, the other team would be forked with those 2 guys at WR 8. As Charlie might have said, I think our coaches got out-schemed today... Charlie was out schemed by an unknown Rice coach today...I hope he can hang on long enough for little Charlie to get a degree before he's fired. I must note however that the Patriots still have not won a Super Bowl since Charlie left.
Also...I am no defensive genius but I knew just by looking at the formation when we were going to run and when we were going to pass...think maybe Greg Hudson the Purdue DCoord knew that as well and that certainly makes it a lot easier dialing up the right defense.
1. Purdue played great all night 3. Our playbook is very one dimensional and predictable. 4. Farley has regressed to the point he needs to sit. None of the MLBs can play pass defense. Russell has a bullseye on him. I'm ready to see some fresh faces. I hate our offensive scheme. It puts incredible pressure on Rees. Kelly loves the empty backfield. GA3 is a track sprinter playing football. No instincts for the game.
After the game, Coach Kelly was talking to Greg Hudson, the former ND LB under Holtz and Purdue's DC. I wonder if Coach Kelly was giving him his card and saying, call me. Niklas. Ugh! He lost money last night. We can't rely on the TE as a pass catcher. We really miss what Eifert did for us the past two years. I noticed that GAIII had a problem staying on his feet, even in the open field. Not sure what the problem is there. Also not sure why the scathing criticism of GAII. I agree he is not a power runner and he does not break tackles like McDaniel, but in 5 carries, he averaged 5.4 yds per carry, far more than any other back. He also had 119 yds in KO returns and gave us good field position a couple of times, which is why he's back there. If Brindza doesn't put his KOs in the end zone, we have issues with our KO return team. The Purdue returner almost broke it twice last night. I'm concerned about Jones' judgement on punt returns. There's the obvious mistake fielding the punt on the 5 yd line, but another time he hung much too close to a loose ball vs. getting out of the way. I hope this will be addressed in practice. I agree that our pass coverage is woeful and that #6 and #41 both are clueless and can't tackle, but has anyone taken the time to notice that we gave up only 38 yds rushing? Our front 7 is effective against the run. Against the pass, not so much.
