Wow, what an embarrassing blunder! http://ftw.usatoday.com/2013/06/college-world-series-dugout-spelling-error/
If you read the entire article, take note that Oregon State and Louisville have used that as the home dugout. Might be an omen here for the teams using that dugout??
Looking at the path for Mike's pic, it looked like an image that was once in Doc O's folder with airmail but is no longer there. http://web2.airmail.net/okeefe/Marissa%20with%20ND%20hat.jpg from this folder http://web2.airmail.net/okeefe/
hmmm...I did do some house cleaning recently. Sorry Mike. If you'll send me it again, I'll put it back.
Very surprised to see UCLA sweep the series with Missippissi State for the college title last night. Bruins shut out the Bulldogs 8-0 for their first college world series title. No great hitters, but certainly some very effective pitching.
I wasn't. They absolutely dismantled that vaunted Miss State hitters. Pitching and defense has always been my thing and this is one of my favorite college baseball teams ever.. probably my favorite team that I didn't coach. I would hope this ends the cash whoring NCAA steam rolling the nation's best baseball conference, but it won't. Next year, the Pac12 will get another 4 teams while the SEC will get 9 and the ACC will get 8... and at this time next year, we'll get to listen to ESPN announcers try to come up with excuses as to why their network's 'best conference' didn't win it all. This UCLA team beat San Diego State, then Cal Poly.... then they shut out the University of San Diego, then shut out Cal State Fullerton TWICE before getting to Omaha where they beat LSU, NC State, North Carolina and Miss State twice. The only teams to score more than 1 run against the Bruins in post-season play were Cal Poly (4) and San Diego State (3)... I absolutely loved listening to the announcers crying for a 'lively ball' or to 'bring back the pop' in the bats. Hypocrisy abounds... remember them running piece after piece about the safety of players and how ridiculous the bats were? I only wish Indiana could have gone further in this tournament. That was a very good team.
re: UCLA They had the best pitching and that's always the best thing to have. They'll be back with more next year; they only have one senior on the entire roster... re: Only four 12Pac teams picked for the tourney. It's a disgrace. This is baseball we're talking about, not ice hockey. Most MLB players come from just one state: California. Of the 66 CWS titles, 12Pac teams have won 28 of them. That's 44% of the total and when you add in the six titles won by other Far-West teams like Cal-State Fullerton, Fresno State and Pepperdine the Far-West has won 51% of the total CWS ever played.
In an unrelated post, I'm not sure I should feel comfortable about being compared by George to Moe Green. I'm not planning to get a rubdown any time soon.
Rod Dedeaux won something like 10 of those 28 at USC. I read that he was only paid a $1 a year because he had a trucking business that was very successful. An honest UsC coach? Is it possible?
