Wow! I'll have to tell my kids that my grandkids belong to the community. What an idiot.

Oh, so those kids really belonged to the community? Well why the hell wasn't the community there when we were feeding, clothing, and caring for them? Where was the community when we were paying for their schools and universities? Where was the community when were were potty training them, teaching them to walk and talk and drive? The same morons who told us that if you have a business, you didn't really build it, now claim an interest in our children. Bizarro world.

Where were they when Corey and his friends crashed that Sheriff's helicopter into that house in Claremont? Where were they last St. Patrick's Day when Eric forgot where he left his truck and broke the door down, because he forgot his keys somewhere too? Over the years I've shelled out more dough than the Pillsbury Dough Boy. Has this stuff been tax deductable all along? I wanna rebate!

Technically, I was not responsible for a lot of things in my life but putting the technicalities aside, I still got into just as much trouble...

It's really nothing great. As a matter of fact, it's a terrible tragedy.

It speaks volumes about the possible consequences of over zealous police activity, but no one ever wants to view it that way. it's gotta be the kid's fault.

Long story short, someone hired me to throw a party in Claremont. (rich white kid country) I did what I was paid to do. Someone called the police (they always do) and that someone isn't me. I was never that short sighted party promoter who makes the quick buck from the gate and then calls the cops to cash out and leave. You piss people off that way and they want their money back.. some of those people have guns and knives. I like leaving my customers happy... so, the party raged on. Good times... but then the cops showed up.

Now.. you can disagree with me on this and I won't care. I won't listen, you're wrong.. that being said.

Instead of 2 cops showing up at the door and clearing out the party. (that's all they need) In a worst case scenario, all you need is a second car to sit out on the street and tell the kids to keep moving. The vast majority of kids don't want trouble. They are terrified of getting arresteed or really any police contact. They'll go wherever you tell them. There's usually one or two assholes who will stand up to the police and cause some trouble. There's always 1 or 2 of those everywhere you go.

That being said.. during my senior year, I noticed a disturbing trend in police activity. Instead of the simple cop at the door telling everyone to go home, they were now showing up with 6 to 8 squad cars. They were brandishing and using pepper spray, tazers (sic?), batons etc.. Just good old fashioned police brutality.. Oh, and they'd also call in the helicopter. You know, the police helicopter that's supposed to be used for car chases, fires and to oversea police operations that involve multiple city blocks? Yeah, that.. Why waste that tax payer dollar? Who knows.. but seeing that ghetto bird over each city somehow makes people feel safer.

Anyway, the party got broken up.. the police were busy tossing kids about and the police helicopter crashed right into the house. The police pilot was killed and everything. It was rather terrible. Even as a kid, I felt bad for the man and his family.

It was all unnecessary. Kids aren't going to stop having parties no matter how dramatic of a police force you send out to break it up. A man died because of that, and you really have to ask yourself.. why did this guy die? Of course, people went on and on about how 'kids today are out of control'..

It should be mentioned that I'm a child of the hippie generation. That **** never played with anyone my age. My parents friends all have these wild tales of drug filled orgies, 2 week long road trips without their parents permission, hitch hiking up and down the California coast etc etc etc..

Yet, I'm out of control for hosting a FULLY CATERED indoor party that's the size of a medium to large Catholic wedding...?? Sheeeeet...

Everyone got blamed, everyone felt terrible including myself. A wife lost her husband, kids lost their dad, the community lost a good man... And why?

The one thing that never happened is that no one asked 'Why in the world was he there? Are the police so incompetent that they require more than 80% of their operational force on a Saturday night to shut down a white bread suburban keg party. It's just a terrible story that I don't actually find a lot of humor in. I've seen a lot of police brutality and excessive force in my life, especially when you consider that I'm a white kid from the burbs. I mean, I lived in the hood for half my life, but not all of it.. I've never seen more police brutality and misconduct than I did in suburban SoCal. For some reason, people think those guys actually keep them safe.

and before George chimes in with 'my son is saving lives'.. I agree. Your son's situation is actually nothing like the situation that has been ongoing in California for the past 30 years.

The upside is their hypocrisy and wasteful spending is catching up with them.

Corey and his pals decided to throw a party...at somebody else's house. The parents who owned the home had gone to Las Vegas for the weekend...

The boys handed out printed advertisements all over the valley......forgetting that there are more than 2 million people living between West Covina and Fontana, with Claremont in the middle....

They realized their mistake when they couldn't get into their own party. In fact, the crowd was so big that they couldn't get within four blocks of the place. It was like Woodstock. Thousands and thousands of people...milling around, making love in the shrubbery, hauling away furniture, taunting the police... In the middle of this mayhem, a sheriff's helicopter ran out of gas and crashed through the roof of the home...

The next morning it was headline news, with a picture of the home (with a helicopter in it) on the front page. It also made all the local TV and radio news shows. You can imagine the reaction of the parents when they returned "home" from Vegas. The neighborhood looked like a war zone, with their destroyed house in the middle. One blade of the helicopter was sticking out of the roof in front, with the other blade resting in the swimming pool in the back yard. The cockpit was in the living room...

At the time, Corey assured me that this was the first time that he and his friends had attempted to organize a party that big, but he was sure that they could do better in the future. I just stared at him...

We've had a few of those in Houston, but in today's world instead of handing out fliers somebody tweets party as Sid's house his parents are out of town. Well you can guess how many times something like that gets re-tweeted. Disaster occurs.

I can't even imagine what might have happened if Corey and his crew (known as the Kamikazis) had cell phones. As it was, Steinhour worked for the phone company right out of high school, giving them all access to free telephone calls. He was also a part-time comedian known as the "Great Stevo."

Assuming the dual accounts of this fiasco are true, I amazed that you are amazed at the number of cops on the scene.

By your accounts It is believed that there were hundreds or thousands at this party that had been heavily advertised by you. It is assumed that some were carrying guns and knives. The owners of the house are not home. There is widespread chaos spilling well out into the neighborhood. Most of the "guests" don't know one another . At some point, a police helicopter crashes into the house and an officer is killed.

And you think one or two cops could have just knocked on the door and politely asked the kids to leave? Maybe you should have showed them how to manage a crowd like that.

I'd say you're damned lucky that several "guests" were not shot or mauled by the dogs. Or that people did not spend an extended tour in jail. Or that law suits didn't fly around like confetti. Or did they?

Ok no one died the pilot was injured when he landed in the living room there were no guns or knives carried by the attendies. Corey and his friends had numerous partys of which I am sure they made good money to fund their trips to the river. and ski trips or beach parties . They are all really good boys just a little mishchievious 8) and enjoyed themselves always, Now you know why Joco and I didn't take vacations until the kids where older. We went to dinner for our anniversary once and came home with a house full of kids. no parking for blocks. but the boys were afraid of Jim. so it ended very quickly. They were most known for their Toga parties. But as for weapons. none at parties it was a different time then and the kids only were looking for good times and beer. Corey graduated in 1987 most partied took place between his sophomore and senior years. By the senior year most parents just hosted the parties themselves with the kids turning over their keys and never left the homes. out of necessity. As for their river trips or beach I never asked didn't want to know  . Skiing usually were just one day expeditions since the lifts are about an hour away from us. but my dad had a house in Big Bear for weekend trips. Life with Corey was always an adventure. not a bad one just never knew what they would be up to next :D

:) PS George our towns were small then the kids all knew each other usually. from sports or grammer schools most kids went from catholic to public in high school and the police our police stations never had more than 10 officers per city a lot of them related to the party goers the boys all went to Damien and the girls well they were from surrounding high schools and they all wanted a Damien boyfriend (they usually had the money and the cars) Not all of California cities or towns are La or San Francisco , where we live the communites were small everyone knew everyone. and the towns sat practically on top of each other with a few orange groves in between

Now there are 3 accounts of this party. I'd say that the O'Connor clan needs to come to a ND football game and meet us all at a watering hole and a jury of their peers will listen to the evidence and declare them all Irish and of course full of blarney!! :) Then drinks all around!
