Somebody posted that the guy in that .gif (Yu Darvish) can throw a curve ball in the low 60's and a fast ball in the high 90's and his delivery makes them all look the same when they leave his hand.
I'm sure Corey and Jim would agree that success at the highest level means being able to throw with the exact same motion every pitch and being able to throw at least 3, preferably 4, different pitches with that motion. If Darvish can do that from 60 to 90+, as the video suggests, he truly is a Whirling Darvish. Sorry. Couldn't resist. :lol:
I meant to leave a comment very similar to the one Sid left when this was posted. It's the secret of Greg Maddux and all great pitchers. You don't have to throw 97, if they can't tell what's coming. I remember putting on a tutorial about pitch tipping and delivery point for that gamecock dude (Rusty?) years ago. He was dismissive... Funny enough, I read a Gamecock baseball blog a couple of years ago covering the SECbaseball tourney and the author went on and on about things I had tried teaching Rusty. I don't know if it was him, or not.. Any way, that guy's release points and mechanics are flawless.
OK Dodger Dog: Your scouting report on Hyun-Jin Ryu, please. I bought him in our NL only roto league for $9 and his early performances seem like I stumbled upon the second coming of Fernandomania. 12Ks in 6 innings last night which is pretty impresive given that he is not a classic power pitcher. Is he this good or is this a situtaion where the hitters are unfamilar with his tendencies and will eventually catch up to him?
re: Hyun-Jin Ryu You uncovered a real gem there. In his last broadcast, Vin Scully suddenly blurted out, "This guy can pitch!" Scully raves and raves about how clever this young Korean is and quite frankly...I agree. Ryu is left-handed and throws into the mid 90's, but there's a lot more to the story than that. He knows exactly what he's doing. He saws off corners with great control. He changes speeds from 80-94. He never throws to the same location twice in-a-row. He fields his position as good as any pitcher in the game, and he can hit for average as well as bunt. Remember...these Asian pitchers may be new to us, but they're experienced pros who have played all over the world. So far this year, this guy has been the best pitcher on a pitching staff that includes Kershaw and Greinke... He's in the first year of a six year contract that's beginning to look cheap. DD, Thanks!! Looks like the Dodgers may be passing the Giants by when it comes to quality starting pitching. Kershaw, Greinke, and Ryu is pretty scary thresome and Beckett and Cappy still have a few miles left in the tank.
When are the fire sales going to start in Los Angeles? Dodgers are 13-20 and 6.5 games out in last place and the Angels are 11-22 and 9.5 games out.

One of them is batting .088 after starting thirty games and they're last in the league in runs scored... Both teams have become magnets for poison darts and flaming spears after spending more than a half-Billion dollars in combined salaries on a bunch of tomato cans...
