As a lifelong fan of the sport and the US Men's Team, this is hands down the best article documenting the real 'start' of the rivalry between the United States and Mexico. Forget what history tells you. Forget whatever nonsense ESPN puts out there. This is the game and this article, although long, perfectly captures the feel for it all. This is a fantastic, well documented article.

And just so we're clear, although I'm normally Mr multi-cultural tolerance and all that... to hell with El Tri

Exactly 30 years ago? They didn't play, but the result of the game the article is written about is 2-1 US.

not that many folks watched, but the US tied Mexico 0-0 is Estadio Azteca last night. That's just the 2nd time they've taken points away in that stadium ever in World Cup qualifying. This is huge for a number of reasons.

    1. After the US started the qualifying campaign with a humiliating, head scratching loss. They've now cleared the most dangerous hurdle in the qualifying campaign. This tie, combined with the win over Costa Rica, has put the US back on the good foot going forward. The opening loss to Honduras hurts, but they US will get them at home in June to set that straight.

    2. Mexico is now winless in the group with 3 ties. If history has shown us anything, and it has, the Mexicans will now go on a tear destroying everything in their path. This helps the US in that Mexico will wind up killing everyone including Honduras in prep for their rematch with the US in Columbus.

    3. Honduras is turning out to be better than people expected. I watched their match with Mexico, and Honduras is flat out tough at home. In the 2nd leg, they'll be playing both the US and Mexico on the road.

Damn, this video reminds me of a road trip I made to Columbus a while ago. The Mexican riot police need to buy some Ohio born German Shepards, though, to get the full "welcome wagon" effect

in defense of our lads, that is 2 straight games for the US in Azteca without a loss (one win and one tie). Were those flying water bottles? It looks like we've signed all the good pitchers from that place so that's good news on the scouting front in baseball. I appreciate the few hundred US fans standing tall and not backing down. It's that kind of 'can do' attitude that got us the southwestern US.

    to hell with El Tri
