from FOX Sports . . . If there was ever a case of SEC bias, it is with that rationale. The Crimson Tide are the defending champions and may actually be considered the favorite in a showdown with the Irish, but that shouldn't detract from what the Irish have earned up to this point. If it is strictly a resume thing, Notre Dame wins hands down. Despite playing in the "nation's toughest conference" where exactly are Alabama's "quality" wins this season?. If you count the victory over Michigan in the season-opener, you have to also count the Irish's win over the same Wolverines. The rest of Alabama's non-conference slate consists of a pair of Sun Belt foes (Western Kentucky and Florida Atlantic) and last week's FCS opponent Western Carolina. The Tide also beat up on bad Arkansas, Missouri and Tennessee programs that have a combined 13 wins between them and they will close out against rival Auburn which has just three wins on the year and none in SEC play. Alabama does have a marquee win at LSU (21-17), but that's it. Meanwhile, Notre Dame's slate includes wins over Michigan, Stanford and Oklahoma. In fact, the Irish's strength of schedule ranks 9th in the FBS, while Alabama's comes in a distant 20th, according to the popular Congrove Computer Rankings. Kansas State is the closest to Notre Dame in terms of strength of schedule with a ranking of 13, while Georgia ranks 40th and Oregon ranks 59th. Even Ohio State, which ranks fourth in the top-25 despite being ineligible for postseason play, comes in at 25th on the list.
I'm confused. What rationale? Last thing being discussed was my proposal for a poll system that was no in any way biased except maybe against FCS.
wasn't a reference to your suggestion Tom, just tossed it as it seemed to fit the original topic..btw it wasn't my writing I copied that from Fox Sports.
The Congrove you cite has UF's SOS at #11. This one is not part of the six used by the BCS... a composite of which have Florida ranked at #2 presently behind Notre Dame. "Six computer rankings are used for the BCS: • Jeff Sagarin • Anderson & Hester • Richard Billingsley • Colley Matrix • Kenneth Massey • Dr. Peter Wolfe
Is the Harris poll a human poll? Dave said earlier that 2 human polls are used. I know the disreputable coaches poll still is a part of it. (they don't watch the games, and they vote strictly politically.. it's worse than Heisman balloting).. The one reputable human poll that I can think of (the AP) dropped out of the BCS because it's a farce.
The Harris poll is probably the most representative and conscientious of any of the rankings: "Its 115 voters are randomly selected to represent each conference and the independents. Harris Interactive selects 10 voters each from a pool of candidates provided by each conference, bringing the total voters to 110. Candidates submitted by the four independents make up the final five spots in the poll." http://www.athlonsports.com/college-football/college-football-who-votes-harris-poll By being former administrators and coaches and even media they probably have more time on their hands to pay attention.
Tommy Bowden is a voter.. Former Admins who still draw pensions and pay checks from... yes, they are obviously unbiased.... Jesus H.
I've done some number crunching using Tom's suggestion. I'll post the results in a new subject since they are again long posts.
Check out these Congrove Computer rankings of teams on Notre Dame's schedule: BYU #53 Miami #61 Navy #65 MSU #66 Pitt #71 Purdue #75 WakeF #85 BC #107 All FBS teams..... but all ranked behind these two "fillers" on Florida's schedule: UL-L #49 Bowling Green #52 Pretty damned interesting huh? Thanks Terry for bringing this Congrove ranking to light.
As a wise man once said, "pull the other one". ULaLa is 6-4 against this schedule: Win #1: 0-12 FCS Lamar Win #2: 5-6 Troy Loss: 7-3 Oklahoma St. Win #3: 3-8 Florida Int. Win #4: 2-9 Tulane Loss: 4-7 N. Texas Loss: 8-3 Arkansas St. Win #5: 7-4 ULM Loss: 10-1 Florida Win #6: 6-5 W. Kentucky Win #7?: 2-9 S. Alabama Win #8?: 3-8 Florida Atl. As usual you pick and choose those few parts of a conversation that APPEAR to support you gacked view of things. ULaLa has a chance to go 8-4 against that schedule. They have two good teams in Okie St. and Florida (both losses, one of which came down to a blocked punt, ahem) on their schedule, and the only "decent" win is against 7-4 Lousiana-Monroe, another shitty team with just as bad a schedule. Being a bad team with a decent schedule means nothing, and I wouldn't crow too loud about how proud you are with that team. Let's look at your other "proud moment in Florida scheduling", shall we? Bowling Green is 7-4 against this schedule: Loss: 10-1 Florida Win #1: 1-10 Idaho Loss: 8-3 Toledo Loss: 5-6 Virginia Tech Win #2: 0-11 Rhode Island Win #3: 1-10 Akron Win #4: 4-7 Miami (OH) Win #5: 1-10 UMass Win #6: 2-9 E. Michigan Win #7: 8-3 Ohio Loss: 10-1 Kent St. Win #8?: 4-7 Buffalo Another proud 13 point victory by the Gators, against a team that has as the schedule stalwarts Florida, TOLEDO and KENT ST. (all losses by the way).
Corey... you obviously didn't read this: "from a pool of candidates provided by each conference, bringing the total voters to 110. Candidates submitted by the four independents make up the final five spots in the poll." I think what I see here is an attempt by the BCS to create an unbiased poll where every conference and the independents are represented. On the Congrove... hey I am not drawing any conclusions about who would do what to whom... just reporting the rankings from a poll that Terry.. not me.... chose to work with.
I read it.. it's horse ****. What I think is funny is that I read Dave's post about 'fillers' and immediately opened 3 tabs to expose the ******** that he was tossing out there.. luckily I scrolled down to see Kes and Terry had already done that. He just stuck to results. He left things out like..ULaLa got smoked by Oklahoma State 65-24 (that I saw), he just mentioned that they lost. Teams like Bowling Green were crushed by the likes of Virginia Tech (who I'm fairly certain is average AT BEST) 37-0.... He omitted fillers like Jacksonville State (also on the Florida schedule) who was crushed by Arkansas, oh hell... they were crushed by Eastern Kentucky 51-21.. The most amazing thing about that is that I didn't even know there was an eastern Kentucky! You keep on grasping at straws Dave.. it's actually entertaining.
Corey, We all see things like you say. We don't mention them for several reasons: 1) Deleted because I was wrong to post it. 2) Respect for Bill that shows Gator loyalty without trying to prove the Gators to be superior to everyone else. 3) Respect for the "lurking" Gators like RoGator, TreeFrog, and WZT that have to listen to the crap that he spews forth and are embarrassed by it. At times people get on your last nerve. I think everyone here knows this about Dave. However, I was wrong to post #1 above and I apologize for doing so. It has been deleted.
I merely give you facts Corey and you prove once again you can't deal with it. You can take what you want from from those Congrove rankings..... and obviously you did see it your way. I just listed what they are.......no interpretation offered. When you guys get cornered you resort to lashing out as usual. The explanation of the Harris voters is factual... listed by Athlon.... I didn't make it up brotha. Here is what you do have deal with..... Florida's schedule is good enough... even with a couple of "cupcakes"...... that if the Gators beat FSU and your Irish stumble to the Trogs then UF will play for the national title...... finishing #1 in the computer polls strictly because of that schedule..... of all things. Now good luck to those Irish......whose own schedule is good enough that they are presently ranked #1 in the computer polls....... in addition to being ranked #1 by those despised, biased Harris voters and feeble minded coaches.
Uncalled for attack there Tom.... protected by your position. You should try to notice that I will come to the defense of anything fired at the Gators..... with vigor..... and it happens plenty. Plus I know anything Gator related from me in particular rankles the hell out of you anyway. Plus you should also notice that I dance carefully around anything Tenn related that's negative.....most of the time.
By the way... re: ND's "letdown" game vs. Pitt....the Panthers lost to Youngstown State who incredibly lost to North Dakota State by 48-7. WOW!
