I have seen parts of some BYU games, they do seem to have a good defense, but I'm not sure how good. Oregon State plugged in a new QB last week and beat their butts. But their offense is on the level of our offense in being up and down. Bottom line is that we are favored by 2 touchdowns and that seems about right. Their offense had no where near the potential of the Miami offense, so I don't see them scoring all that much, esp if we can hold a team like Stanford without a offensive touchdown. The risk here is that the team will overlook them seeing Oklahoma coming up on the schedule. Kelly's job though is to prevent that and get them ready. I hope Golson is cleared to play, so far nobody is talking about whether or not he will play. But this is a perfect game for him to get some more confidence in the position. But if we have to go with Tommy Rees I'll still feel confident that we can and will win the game. Team should be otherwise healthy for BYU. I've heard lots of positive things about recruiting, only negative is the Anzalone kid seems to have a Dad who wants him at Fla. Dad is a UF grad. If we continue to do well it seems like we are going to run out of spots or Kelly is going to have to look at who is eligible for 5th years and make some decisions on who not to bring back to open up slots for more young guys.
ND <r>Terry,<br/> <QUOTE><s> </e></QUOTE> I don't think so Terry. This team seems a little different. Not saying this won't be a tough game but I think these guys aren't overlooking anyone anymore.</r>
BYU's defense is very, very good. That's what made last week's performance by Oregon State's backup QB so amazing. Hell, they are unbeaten and their starter hasn't looked that good all year.. could be just one of those special spotlight moments by the young man. I would say BYU's defense is not as good as Stanford, but at least as good if not much better than the other defenses we've faced. IMHO, of course.
We opened as a two TD favorite. I can't picture any scenario where their defense is anywhere near the equal of Stanford.
There is a very interesting article from 2009 on Brian Kelly, it was written in Nov of 2009 and is very complimentary. Kelly was at the end of an undefeated season at that point...not far from taking the Notre Dame job. I found this comment very interesting given he has not been able to develope a QB to match the QB's he had in Cincinnati. Brian Kelly[/quote]
The last time that BYU visited South Bend, I was at the game. The Cougs sent everybody at the QB on every play and that was a disastrous strategy, as the Irish had Samardzija and Stovall split out wide as targets for Quinn... <iframe width="640" height="360" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/3tIL33G0yUk?feature=player_embedded" frameborder="0"></iframe>
Recruiting....not many spots left. Rumors that USC commit Max Redfield who was at the Stanford game had a great trip and could possibly flip to ND. Also the ongoing Anzalone story has no good news. He suppoesdly will be on campus for the BYU game and I hope he publically reaffirms his verbal to ND. If he doesn't then he's probably gone. The Mattingly kid is also supposedly shaky now as well.
Remember the Booker kid who switched hats on on Signing day several years ago and went to FSU? That's the day I swore off trusting 18 year olds to keep their word.
I agree with Corey. This is one of the best defenses we've seen all season. Points will be hard to come by this week.
Nice article. Got a laugh out of the part about whipping out his Amex at the bookstore and loading up with blue and gold junk.
I hope it starts raining real hard.. because Rees ain't walking on water right now. The last INT wasn't his fault.. the entire rest of this shitty first half is.. although I don't honestly blame him. He is what he is and right now without the threat of mobility we're dead. BYU pulls the umbrella in coverageand they stay dry while we slowly drowned.. Right now he's committed all of the mistakes the 'pull Golsen' crown gets their panties in a bunch over.. except that he's not as talented. To Rees' credit, he's burned BYU every time they've gone to man coverage or use a 1 deep safety..smartly, they've stopped doing that. If they are smart enough to concede the underneath running game and keep the umbrella out, we're in a lot of trouble
Another missed FG... once again, the second the defense pulls the umbrella, the drive dies. Why not use Hendrix in the red zone? Granted, you can literally see him thinking on the field but you'll need an axe to cut him down once he starts toward the line.
