Hornung told Detroit's AM-1270 The Sports Station, an ESPN radio affiliate, on Tuesday that Notre Dame must ease up on its academic restrictions because "we gotta get the black athlete. We must get the black athlete if we're going to compete," Hornung said. Hornung was asked in the interview about the state of college football and why it seems that there "just aren't giants anymore." "No, no," Hornung said in agreement. The interviewer asked, "Is it limited scholarships?" Hornung then gave his response. Hornung said that Notre Dame's schedule was a factor in his having that opinion. "You can't play that type of schedule," Hornung said. "We're playing eight bowl teams next year ... and it's always year in and year out ... one of the toughest schedules. "You can't play a schedule like that unless you have the black athlete today. You just can't do it, and it's very, very tough, still, to get into Notre Dame. They just don't understand it, yet they want to win." Notre Dame spokesman Matthew Storin called Hornung an illustrious alumnus but objected to his comments. "We strongly disagree with the thesis of his remarks," Storin said in a statement. "They are generally insensitive and specifically insulting to our past and current African-American student-athletes." Hornung Gaff
 Stanford has beaten the Irish and out-recruited the Irish in recent years, with HIGHER academic standards...
Good article on ND by Pat Forde, sort of a rebuttal of the Rick Reilly article from a few weeks ago. ND doesn't compromise values
gipper and Sid probably heading to the Pep Rally about now...it's almost noon here in Houston. Go Irish!
Paul Hornung has company......... According to Chicago's Chet Koppock Facebook page, former Notre Dame running back Allen Pinkett has been fired as the color commentator on the Notre Dame radio broadcast IMG for his comments on 670 The Score yesterday regarding the need for more "criminal" players for the football team to flourish.
The guys on my drive time radio show were actually supportive of Pinkett. They said he should have said something other than "Criminal", but that his point was fair. Ted Johnson who played ball at Colorado and the Patriots said that at Colorado that McCartney purposely recruited Compton and that area for gang bangers because they needed them to give the team that edge, said that you need a mix of guys who are fellowship of Christian Athletes types and gang bangers.
I did not see Sid or Gip in this video, I guess they took another plane. BTW when did it become cool to not take the price tag off of your hat? I hope Louis Nix has a great year, he seems like a guy who would be fun to have around. <iframe width="640" height="360" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/OlAS3bHNOwc" frameborder="0"></iframe>
Deleted. I posted where he was suspended but I guess he now has been fired. I still think that too often people get canned for saying something stupid...perhaps even partly in jest. I mean I know that his statements do not reflect what Notre Dame is all about...but I'm just saying that sometimes the trigger gets pulled pretty quickly.
I hadn't seen that he'd been fired, I did see that he'd been suspended. I think the suspension was warranted, but I don't know about the firing. To me the odd thing was that the hosts of the radio show realized he needed a 2nd shot at that and gave him a chance to clarify his remarks and he just dug a deeper hole.
Just got back from the "pep rally." it was quite an experience. You'd think that without the team and Coach Kelly it wouldn't be very motivating but that was not the case. A number of top Irish entertainers performed. There were onstage interviews with Jack Swarbrick and Fr. Jenkins. The band was the star of the show parts joining into a number of performances. The show stopper for me was an Irish tenor singing "You lift me up" with ND highlights playing on a big screen. WOW! The night ended with the ND band joining the shows orchestra in a stirring Irish fling followed by the Alna Mater and the Victory March. Worth watching un YouTube if it's posted
Notre Dame misses the first extra point of their year. What kind of kicker misses... oh wait... Tennessee did the same thing you say? Well, in that case, it just shows a high level of sportsmanship to not get too far ahead of the competition! Since we had common starts, I'll predict a common end. 35 Notre Dame 21 Navy
ND is looking pretty good. Gipper, what kind of beer are you drinkin' laddie...I think I just saw ya...
I have Notre Dame as my 20 point selection in our pickem contest. Looks like I made a good pick. This game is no contest. Sid, I too am jealous. If you would have taken me with you I would have even rooted for the Irish.
Great day. Temps in the mid 60s partly sunny skies. Tickets on the 50 yd. line. 4 torpedoes midships in the Navy.
AJ what is a Devil Dog....... and I think I saw Mike for a brief second to.... Cant do many 6 am games but with a win like that can make exceptions.
If anyone knows of a stream to the game, I missed the entire thing. I had 'dad duties' early on... then when I went to catch the second half, our local CBS affiliate started cutting in for bullsh*t US Open coverage.... f*&k you Andy Roddick..
