Have seen references in a few different preseason articles about the talent level being down at UF and I took a look at the past three team recruiting rankings on ESPN and saw that the Gators were #1, #12 and # 4. Presently UF is a solid #3 for 2013. So....what do you have to do recruiting wise to top that if classes such as those three don't equate to having top talent on campus????
MCG, What reasons do they give for claiming UF's talent level is lower? Gerry Faust at Notre Dame used to have some of the highest rated classes ever, but when Lou Holtz took over, he found a team that was stacked deep at some positions and totally lacking at others...
That could be part of it Jo'Co. I saw the new UF depth chart yesterday and actually the team does have a lot of depth defensively and from recruiting appearances the offense does too but some of those positions like WR and OL have not panned out......yet.
I keep meaning to get back to the SEC topic. I plan on addressing these things.....thanks for the reminder
Why does UF have less talent than say Alabama? It's the same old thing, player evaluations and player development. It's why Texas finds itself short on talent in some positions. Guys who were hot shots in HS, either turn out to be busts, or they have character issues, don't pay attention to academics, injuries, etc. Because UF has recruited annually what the guru's have deemed top 10 talent every year since the early 90's. Even Zook always recruited top 10 talent. Of course I'm of the opinion that evaluations are skewed towards California, Texas and Fla when rating talent. If you are good and play in one of those states you have an edge when getting rated by services that assign stars over kids from most other states.
All of those are valid points Terry......except that I wouldn't say "even" Zook.....because he was a great recruiter who basically assembled the 2006 National Championship team that Meyer won with. I think the UF defense has a chance this season to be a game changer.....a season maker. They completely throttled FSU in a game in which the offense kept giving up TOs and terrible field position. I came away from that game disgusted with the offense but very impressed by the defense. Offensively....after the debacle last season with Chollie.....I can only hope that Pease from Boise will inject some newfound confidence and playmaking skills......taking advantage of some of those "hot shot" recruits.
