I don't believe that Boise and Utah would have had the depth and talent to survive in a 4 team playoff. Catch the first opponent off guard....burn some depth in the process and then in the Final they get the full attention of the other finalist. Boise now plays everyone they can to upgrade their schedule and probably would not get overlooked by a selection committee as an undefeated team and Utah is in the Pac 12.....probably never ever again to see an undefeated season because of it.....which ought to tell you something.
Well, what did you think of the whole point of the article...that being that now we will argue over which four teams should get in...rather than which two teams?
Like I said in an earlier post....the debate will rage over the coveted 4th spot. It's a debate rife with controversy.....much more so than a mere 1 vs. 2 debate because a myriad of teams with a myriad of reasons can make an argument of why they should be #4. A lot of times like last year not too many if any thought Bama or LSU didn't belong in the top 3. But #4? That's a friggin monstrous debate waitin to happen. I will also be very curious to see how many times out of say 10 years a #4 actually wins the national championship.
I know you refer to USC.....I think. Well now a one loss USC will get it's chance more often than not. Hell a one loss USC would have had it's chance in 2006 if they hadn't laid a fat egg vs. UCLA on decision weekend. If you're talking Utah.....do you really think the Utes will run the table or even have a one loss season in the Pac 12? I don't.
   wow Dave you really dont know a thing about Corey or his father and their knowledge of sports. Doesnt matter which part of the country. I guess ignorance is bliss
Everybody KNOWS Corey and his Dad are HUGE fans of USC! I'll take debating who the 4th team is anyday over what we had. An 8 team playoff is ideal IMHO...
As I said....I'll be very very interested to see how many times a #1 wins the title, vs a #2 vs. a #3 vs. a #4. Hey if #s 3 and 4 win significantly more than 1 and 2 then maybe all these BCS years we were getting it wrong. And I know Corey grew up a USC hater and UCLA fan but he was at the forefront on numerous occasions defending USC vs. the BCS.
How many times has the #1 overall seed in the NFL Conferences made it to the Super Bowl? There have been a number of teams get on a run at the end of the season and win it all. Everybody would have agreed the Packers were the best team in the NFC and most likely overall last year...but they didn't make the Super Bowl. That's going to happen with a college playoff even a 4 team playoff.
I think that could happen in college but there is much more parity of talent in the NFL than in college and some teams like Alabama last year are that much more superior. One factor the NFL does have in it's playoffs is injury and by adding a second game to the college game you do run that risk also at a level where the drop-off from 1st string to 2nd can be very dramatic.
I would suggest that for the most part there is a lot of parity of talent at the top of college football amongst the teams likely to end up in that final 4. As far as injuries...well that could have happened in any of the conference championship games or end of the season rivalry games where a key player is injured and unavailable for bowl games.
I think that happened to UF against FSU the year that Tennessee played them late in the season. Of course, that illegal dirty play by FSU was the only reason Tennessee won the next week.
Tom, That year was 2001 and yes UF had one helluva team and would have been a great #4 in a playoff. The Gators smoked Donovan McNabb in the Orange Bowl that year with a healthy Earnest Graham and by the way the Vols turned around and were upset the following week by LSU in Atlanta. I do still grrrrrr over that one. Naturally occurring injury is bad luck but purposeful injury is dirty play and in today's college football world that play would have been met with punishment. In those days Blobby Bowden walked on water and could do no wrong.
 Scott you know me better than that... Dave: was told not to respond since you probably would question my ability to know anything about sports. being a mrs and all.......
