and basketball players 3-4000$/year. I understand the reasoning behind it, but it just will never happen. First it would be a violation of Title IX to have male athletes get something female athletes don't get. Second while schools like Fla, LSU, Texas, ND, Ohio State, Mich, and more all make money and could easily afford to pay all of their athletes across the board, there are more schools whose Ath Depts don't make money and whose football programs don't make money and it would put them at an even greater competitive disadvantage than they already are right now. Pay the players
And when you pay them they become employees. And you have: Injuries have to be covered by Workman's Compensation Employees have the right to collectively bargain Once they're unionized here come the strikes. Oh Lordy, the O'le Ball Coach has no f'n idea what he wants to unleash.
When Dave is paying $200 to sit in nosebleed country to watch the Gators beat The Citadel to cover the salaries he will realize the error of his ways. The players are paid. They get a free college eductaion. If they don't take advantage of that , well , too bad.
Just politicizing the topic George. I know how most conservatives just wish there were no dastardly employees to have to deal with......I think they view them as useless bums........except for they themselves however.......even if they are in fact one of those useless employees. Rather....I think conservatives view themselves as their own CEO no matter how low paid and mundane their job is.......glorifying their own income and position in the heirarchy of things. How else can you explain it?? We'll just call that phenomenon the "Vain Bain Syndrome".... 8)
And let's not forget that you have to pay athletes in sports that produce little if any revenue. If you pay the male football players, you have to pay female athletes under Title IX. And of course if you're paying the female athletes, you have to pay the non revenue male athletes. That includes, crew, tennis, track etc. This puts quite a financial strain on the athletic departments in many universities. But hey, if they're employers fu@k them....employers suck.
I think Dave started into the Schnapps a little early today. His post above would be offensive if not so utterly stupid.
Dave, While reading that **** you drooled on the keyboard, all I could hear in my head was Dan Akroyd saying "Jane, you ignorant slut!" I think you guys would be wise to heed the words of what Gip is saying here. Paying players would be the end of college athletics.. Or the death of Title IX. You tell me which you'd prefer to keep.. kids being paid with a college education or the end of gender equity. You can't have both. Either or..
Paying them would also make it even harder for the schools without the big $$$$ coming in to compete with the Big 10, Pac 12, Big 12 and of course the SEC.
You know, Spurrier has proven that he's an outstanding coach. Not great, IMO, but outstanding. Yet he has a tendency to open his mouth without thinking through the consequences of what he is saying. This definitely is one of those times.
I completely disagree with paying players. My hell, they receive a FREEEEEEEE education, is that 50k value not enough?? However, I do see a time that the big conferences will be allowed to start paying their players. At that time, I don't see how you don't break those "rich" conferences away from the rest since there's no way the mids can ever compete with that. Then, the NFL will have their farm system without having to spend a dime.
Hey Kes my neighbor just got back from a driving trip out west, including a stop over at Pullman, where he picked up a bunch of cheese at the WSU creamery called "Cougar Gold". Damn good stuff. Said they had some Ice Cream there as well, said it was better than Ben and Jerry's.
The big football controversy out here in the Wild West right now deals with this very topic. UCLA has offered a full-ride football scholarship to Justin Combs; the son of Sean Combs, aka P-Diddy, a rapper and Hollywood music mogul worth maybe $500+ million bucks. http://www.nesn.com/2012/06/sean-p-diddy-combs-son-given-full-football-scholarship-by-ucla.html The kid is a great player with a 3.75 GPA, but liberals are going crazy that a rich kid got a scholarship. The university has tried to expain that football scholarships don't come out of tax money, nor do they have anything to do with tuition for other students. All scholarship money at UCLA comes from profits generated by the football program...but still the jealous wolves continue to howl...
A nice article on what influenced Jaylon Smith's commitment over other schools: Smith Swayed by ND's 99% Graduation Rate for African American Student-Athletes I don't doubt that the 3 Dwenger players on the team - Eifert, Goodman, Springman - put the rivalry aspect aside and worked to encourage him to commit.
I've always thought that if Academics were important, then in close battles ND should win. But of course many of your high profile recruits are interested more in easy academics and getting ready for the NFL. If we could ever start winning consistently again, I think that academic side of things would be big again and a huge positive in recruiting.
I think that the graduatiion rate reflects as much or more so on the type of recruits that commit to ND than to the school itself. The vast majority of the kids who commit know that they will have to be serious about their academics. If you enroll with that understanding and goal, you'll be fine. There is a support system that can help athletes that are determined to succeed in academics.
