College Football News put this out May 2nd and it sums up the 2012 Gators pretty well: http://cfn.scout.com/2/1183034.html Have seen it mentioned in more than one place that the big game for UF this year believe it or not will be the Sept. 8th game at Texas A&M. It sets the stage for what either team should be able to accomplish this year and the Kyle Field 12th man crowd knows it and will be rocking the lid off........so UF will feel right at home......sorta like playing in the cozy confines of Tiger Stadium or Bryant Denny....
In evaluating last year that article doesn't even mention the injury to your only QB who had taken a snap in college before...John Brantley. If Brantley had been healthy last year I would think you would have had a better team. QB is so important in college.
With a healthy Brantley last year we beat Auburn and Georgia and possibly SC. It would have been a better year to be sure......but not great or elite.
I don't know quite what to make of that article. The writer makes some good points but completely misses on others. At QB he talks a lot about Driskel but when me mentions Brissett he dismisses him and said he came in a few years ago. That is wrong, Brissett and Driskel came in at the same time. Brissett was headed for a redshirt year until Brantley got injured and Driskel also got hurt. A lot of Gators, not necessarily a majority but at least a sizable minority, think Brissett will win the battle. Our biggest problem last year was depth, less than 70 scholarship players on the roster. And our offensive line just couldn't handle the better defenses that we played. I never understood the Charlie Weis offense. I was ecstatic when we got him but what I saw was one of the most unimaginative offenses I have ever seen at Florida. We are back to full strength in numbers but very young. I expect better things this year. Fortunately we don't play Alabama or Arkansas, but do play LSU. I think Muschamp has the possibility of being a great coach.
If you check his depth chart Brissett is #1. I am also glad the Gators miss Bama and Arky this year and we get LSU in the SWamp with a week's rest before. The defense does have the chance to be very very good if not great. With a liitle more from our offense that defense might just be great.
Don't put any stock in that depth chart now MCG. Either one of these guys should be good, but I will be surprised if they both stay around. Whoever loses will likely transfer. I hope not but that what typically happens.
My suspicion is that since both Driskel and Brissett were originally courted by Meyer that they were not Charlie Weis type Qbs and they may now show more of what they can do with Pease as the OC.....although his is definitely not a Meyer kind of offense but he might be more flexible with Qbs that can run.
Terry, you are right, Drikel was a baseball player. He is not playing at Florida however. MCG, you are wrong about the recruiting of the two QB's. Meyer was hot after and got Driskel to commit. However it was Charlie Weis who went after and got Brissett.
