Starts next week, but today one of it's most successful, and most controversial coaches passed away Robert Montgomery Knight. Bob Knight, the sixth-winningest coach in Division I men's college basketball history whose Hall of Fame career was highlighted by three national titles at Indiana -- one an undefeated season not since matched -- and countless on-court outbursts, died Wednesday, according to his family. Knight became the youngest coach at a Division I school in 1965 when he broke in at Army at 24. But he made his mark in 29 years at Indiana, including winning a school-record 661 games and reaching the NCAA tournament 24 times in 29 seasons. Knight's first NCAA title came in 1976 when Indiana went undefeated, a feat no team has accomplished since. In 1984, he coached the U.S. Olympic team to a gold medal in Los Angeles, the last American amateur team to claim Olympic gold. Knight won 20 or more games in 29 seasons, compiling a career record of 902-371. Knight was eventually forced out at Indiana in 2000 for violating a "zero tolerance" behavior policy by grabbing the arm of a freshman student who he said greeted him by his last name. It was the final transgression on a long list, which included his most infamous incident -- throwing a chair during a Purdue game -- and accusations of numerous physical confrontations. He was 83.
My granddaughter is going to Samford. They play Purdue Monday. I saw this on a Purdue facebook page.i hope it plays Fixed it for you Stu.
Yeah South Carolina really took it to the Irish and beat them thoroughly. The Men opened with a little easier opponent and won the 1st game nn the Shrewsberry era, beating Niagra.
I saw the ND women's game. To use an analogy, it looked like " men playing boys ". They completely dominated the Irish physically.
Consensus preseason #1, and reigning Nat'l Champion, LSU women, who has a loaded roster, lost handily to Colorado yesterday. UConn in '95 was the last preseason #1 to lose their opening game.
#5 Michigan State lost to big underdog James Madison at home. The game was supposedly scheduled because his nephew is and assistant coach for JMU. According to ESPN Stats & Information research, Michigan State is the first Associated Press top-5 team to lose its season opener at home against an unranked opponent since Kentucky lost at home to Western Kentucky in 2001. Also, Izzo entered Monday's game with a 21-7 record in season openers, per Michigan State.
A shocker for sure Terry. Ohio State really had to mount a late rally to beat Oakland here at home last night, not the magnitude of the Spartan defeat, but one never knows anymore. We will face Texas A & M here friday night. I am sure Scott is licking his chops for an easy victory.
You are a funny man Don... I know what you're up to tho! I expect the Aggies to be run out of the gym by a veritable hail storm of 3's. The Aggies have been terrible at defending the long shot... they basically ignore them.
Watched a great women's basketball game between Iowa and Va.Tech in a neutral site game with 16K fans. But Catlin Clark started the way she left off last season. Scored 40+ points. Hawkeyes win a close one 80-76.
Scott, Your backcourt was awesome this evening. Rebounding not bad either. See you in Texas next year.
Well poop, I thought the game was tonight. I see we did manage to dodge my predicted loss to the 3 pointer barage... Oddly... ESPN only has highlights of OSU plays. Were the Aggies actually there?
