Fickell just hired away the UNC OCoord, sort adding fuel to the rumors that Drake Maye is looking at the Portal. He reportedly can get some really big NIL money if he leaves and move up to a better program than UNC. Some have claimed that Ohio State, Georgia and Alabama are very interested. Speaking of Ohio State with Kevin Wilson leaving will Day elevated Brian Hartline to OCoord?
Good question Terry, local poll shows many fans would like to see Hartline and Frye as co offensive coordinators. Speaking of Ohio State with Kevin Wilson leaving will Day elevated Brian Hartline to OCoord?[/QUOTE]
Good question. I know that some have taken themselves out of the portal and returned to their teams but I don't know if that is automatic. Can a school pull their scholarship for going into the portal? Should they? It seems to me, this is free agency with no protection whatsoever for the "employer". If I was the Head Coach, my first inclination would be to pull the scholarship. If a player doesn't want to be at this school, then I wouldn't want them there.
Let me just illustrate with a situation that I am somewhat knowledgeable on... Drew Pyne. He felt slighted and instantly jumped to the portal. Now he will probably find a home at a smaller school where a 5'11' drop back QB with an average arm is not such an impediment. But what if he doesn't? It would be tough to go back to ND , hat in hand after they picked up another QB in the portal to replace you.
From what I've read... putting your name in the portal currently has no effect on anything, other than outside schools can now "legally" have contact with the player. It is not a notice of leaving the team/school. As George says, you'd think it would be a very bad look with your teammates/coaches... but from what I've seen most of the kids don't necessarily see it that way. "I'm just seeing who might like me more, and giving you a chance to show me more love" is the attitude a lot of them have. I don't see it working out well, but it's new right now, and no equilibrium has been reached.
I don't believe the school has to take them back. Texas had Cam Rising, Shane Buechele and Casey Thompson all enter the portal after the season and leaving Texas with 1 QB. Tom Herman talked Thompson off the Portal. But I'm pretty sure that is unusual. Somebody on another board posted this. Couple of transfer stats that surprised me: - Over 60 QBs have entered the portal - Last year 900 players transferred - Of the 900, less than 100 ended up at Power 5 programs (this shocked me) - 2/3 of the transfers moved down a level My immediate takeaway is that the transfer portal is (thus far) more about castoffs than stars chasing greener pastures (both on the field & NIL). It is also interesting how people are pointing to teams like SC & TCU as potential models, but everyone forgets that MSU was a disaster post transfer bonanza.
With all due respect to Drew Pyne we don’t need him back. I hope he has a great life and uses his ND diploma to help him do just that. we will do just fine

Yeah, I thought so too...there was another column today in our local paper written by a Columbus Dispatch sports columnist that really went after the powers that be for hitting up the fans like that. It was for subscribers only so I couldn't link to it and I'm not sure what kind of ethics is involved in cutting and pasting all or part of the column. It was written by Rob Oller.
So now it's not enough to provide a free education. Or privileged living quarters and menus. Or no academic requirements. Now , in addition to outrageous ticket and parking prices they are asking fans to send money to give directly to these pampered monsters? Are you kidding me? Let's see. do I give money to St. Jude Hospital, Wounded Warriors, Special Olympics or to some rent-a kid to play football for my favorite school until a better offer comes along.
