Cash for grades? I was unaware of this ncaa program.

In August 2020, the NCAA began allowing schools to pay up to $5,980 per year to athletes who performed well in school. This was based on the federal judge’s mandate that year, then confirmed by the Supreme Court in June 2021 during the NCAA v. Alston case. The cash amount is equal to the amount that athletes can earn based on athletic performance as well.

But not many schools are participating, only 21 of 130 division 1 schools are planning on participating for 2022.

I guess that image of the poor athlete who can't take his girlfriend to McDonald's and/or a movie is pretty much dead.

Cash for grades vs cash for endorsing a chicken sandwich.

I really don't have a problem with cash for grades. It's kind of surprising how many players graduate early.

Former OSU star QB Dwayne Haskins was killed today in a pedestrian car accident in Florida. Tragic news.

Spent yesterday with Kesley and his boy at the A&M spring game.
No revelations other than we have some work to do at most positions...

Gators wrap up spring practice next week with a mid week spring game aimed at getting the students more involved.

A lot of us Gator fans are enthusiastic about our new coach. Should probably say optimistic.

I am always a supporter of the new coach but the last several have been disappointing in the end. Hopefully Billy Napier will turn it around.

Can someone explain to me the exodus of so many Georgia football players? Fourteen of the 27 players from last season are gone. (14-13)

Good question Don, the transfer portal has more kids than ever in it now that they don't have to sit out a year. As for the reasons. I do know that the ND kids who have left were not slated to be starters so they left for places where they can either start or get a lot of playing time. They say that once Spring Drills are over there will be more players hitting the portal. For example if at A&M the QB who transfered in from LSU wins the job, that Haynes King is likely to hit the portal. I'm pretty sure that is why Sark says he won't name a starter till the fall, he doesn't want Hudson Card to hit the portal if Quinn Ewers wins the job in the Spring.

I have seen kids though from lower programs who were slated to start leave for higher ranked programs to improve their visibility to the NFL. I'm sure that NIL opportunities could play into it as well. I'm seeing it in basketball as well where kids who haven't been starters leave for programs where they think they will start. Of course my question is how much recruiting of these kids before they enter the portal going on, I've read that currently teams are going to their HS or AAU coaches and telling them if they entered the portal there would be a spot for them at School X and some NIL money.

I've also heard Rick Neuhesial say that NIL money is impacting recruting in sports like baseball where there are 11.5 scholarships to be divided up between 33 players. Now teams have collectives that guarantee the scholarship for all the players on the team, so in essence you have 33 scholarships, 11.5 from the school and 22 from the Baseball Collective.

Alabama got a starting WR from UGA and the word is he wanted to be on a team with a more wide open offense. I think UGA was throwing a lot less last season than other teams and they were using the tight end alot.

Thanks, I guess I have under estimated the attraction to non starters. I knowe we had several players here at Ohio State, who have departed for the same reason.

Not having to sit a year blows the transfer doors off the hinges.
Get ready for kids who transfer more than once in a year.
Not sure how that will work academically, but that's not much of a concern for them anyway.

Don't they only get one "free" transfer? We just got a graduate transfer from Vandy. Offensive lineman.

I think they can only transfer one time without sitting out a year. What happened if nobody picks them Up.... can they return from where they came if they are still wanted there?

They can return, last year's Longhorns QB, Casey Thompson entered the Portal at one point but came back and he was the starter last year before going back in the Portal and leaving for Nebraska.

That is the CURRENT rule... as soon as one sues, the rule will be nullified, and the free for all begins.

I guess by now everyone has read the articles where a Texas player, 5th year DL Moro Ojomo, called out his teammates for caring more about booze, partying and women than winning football.

With players now getting lots of money to support that lifestyle I think this is a going to get worse before it gets better.

Oh yeah and Sark has banned him from talking to the media going forward.:eek:
