Shoulda made the putt in regulation, but glad to see him finally make the putt and get his first win. A lot of people thought he was the best young player without a win.
Phil.... LOS ANGELES -- Even though the Saudi Arabian government has been accused of myriad human rights violations by watchdog groups around the world, Phil Mickelson says he is willing to get involved with a Saudi-financed breakaway golf league to have leverage with the PGA Tour. "They're scary motherf---ers to get involved with," Mickelson told author Alan Shipnuck, who posted an excerpt of his upcoming book, "Phil: The Rip-Roaring (and Unauthorized!) Biography of Golf's Most Colorful Superstar," on the Fire Pit Collective website Thursday. "... They killed [Washington Post reporter and U.S. resident Jamal] Khashoggi and have a horrible record on human rights," Mickelson continued, in an interview that Shipnuck said took place in November. "They execute people over there for being gay. Knowing all of this, why would I even consider it? Because this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reshape how the PGA Tour operates." Mickelson: Will deal with Saudis to pressure tour
L.A. Open living up to it's legacy, #10 a really great driveable par 4, the course really looks great and the Poa annua which is a weed everywhere else, makes the greens interesting. Jordan Spieth had great 1st round till Joaquin Neimann tee'd off and took control with -8 under 63. After this it's off to the dreary Florida courses.
"After this it's off to the dreary Florida courses." Geez, Bay Hill has always been a nice venue. I enjoyed playing there. Then there's Sawgrass which for me at least, is a great tournament especially since almost all the top golfers are there. I used to like Doral but the gutless tour moved that tournament to Mexico because Trump owned it. I don't care much for the Honda and Velspar courses.
re: Saudi Arabia. My son served during Desert Shield on Prince Sultan AB in the desert in Saudi. He said they were the cruelest people he had ever been around. And they having a very prominent slavery system in place but theirs is with a twist. They do not enslave their own people. They lure foreign laborers from all over the world with lavish promises then enslave them on arrival. He said their favorite source of slaves is the Philippines. My uncle was a MGen in the USAF and spent a lot of time there. He would tell me that they bought the latest in military equipment from the US including fighters but that we would not sell them the latest or most sophisticated avionics and gave their pilots bare bones training because they did not trust them. He said those fighter planes were good for parades only.
Yeah that was a bit harsh, I am sure there are a lot of beautiful courses. I do like the course that they play at the Players Championship. But it's, IMHO, hard to beat the Vistas that you get at Torrey, Pebble and Riviera. Plus Scottsdale is so unique.
Mike, are you sure that's the reason? I heard it was a groundskeeping problem. Too many rabbit holes. <wink>
This is too funny....arguing about golf in NV, AZ, CA, FL....and we plan on days off when the Farmers Almanac calls for above 50 in Feburary.
Nieman was on cruise control, till he wasn't now the lead is 2 probably will hold up but not the Sunday walk that at one time it seemed like it was going to be
Yeah, I wonder what his real motivation was for being so confrontational? He kind of jumped off of the cliff with no safety line.
I wonder if Phil has money problems? I know that sounds impossible at first glance but he went all in on this scheme and it appears that it has blown up in his face. He's lost credibility, some friends, respect. I guess Greg Norman is knee deep in this insurgency as well.
I was listening to Golf Central last night on the Golf Channel and they seemed to hint at the same thing. They didn't say it directly but they hinted that Mickelson might need money fast and the Saudi's were ready to satisfy that need.
Back in 1992 when Oakland Hills (hottest club in the US) hosted the Ryder Cup, a friend was a volunteer driver for the players. He was driving a couple of the Americans to a restaurant and overheard one talking about why Mickelson had changed his woods to Callaway just before the Cup. Apparently Callaway paid off 5 or 6 mil. Phil owed in Vegas a payment for his use of their equipment. He was particularly wild in that Cup hitting his driver all over the place.
Greg Norman not a happy camper that the PGA tour has told players that if they sign with the Saudi league they will lose their PGA Tour card and might not get it back. The PGA Tour has told players that anyone who competes in the proposed Super Golf League would face an immediate suspension and a possible lifetime ban. Monahan reiterated the tour's stance during meetings with players in California last week and Florida this week. Monahan told The Associated Press on Wednesday that he made it clear to the players that there is "zero complacency" when it comes to the Saudi league and that any player who signs up with the new circuit would lose their PGA Tour membership.
