I thought this forum could use a topic devoted entirely to the one aspect of college football that has will continue to change this game forever. Today I read about the University of Hawaai which has had 12 players enter the portal because they say the coach is too tough. Apparently he is not woke enough and is old school in his tactics. Among the players leaving are all of the key players as well as the coach's own son !
Yep, this will be the real killer. As soon as the "only one free pass" rule is struck down, it will end any chance at "team" in this sport.
Bramlett graduated and wants to play one more year somewhere close to home, Tuscaloosa I believe, so his parents can see him play easily. Apparently the trip to ND home games was tough on them. Good luck to him. Moala has missed both the 20 and 21 seasons due to torn Achilles tendons. . I question whether or not he should even consider playing football again. Good luck to him as well.
The 5 star freshman who beat out Spencer Rattler, Caleb Williams, has entered the portal. If you believe reddit rumors, an SEC school has made a NIL offer of 7 figures. He said that he was in the portal so he could talk to other schools. But he is open to OU. Sounds like a free agent negotiating with the market.
This system is rotten to the core and will be fully exploited. It is now pro football and has little to no connection to academics whatsoever. ND OT Quinn Carroll enters the portal today.
Yeah he said it was the only way he could contact other schools to get all of his options. Certainly sounds like the NFL.
if the NCAA doesn't get a handle on the Portal, early signing day and NIL stuff then NCAA football is going going to be a pile of crap
You are sadly so correct! How can you coach with this stuff going on. You have no idea who is going to be on your team tomorrow let alone next season. Sad. It's the end of college football and will probably be the end of me as a fan. I've long since lost any compassion for College basketball after being an IU fan since childhood and now NCAA football is almost at that point for me.
Not all bad news. It is being reported that Foskey is coming back next year. He should be a first team AA based on his play this year.
While some might equate the NIL with the turning college football into a professional sport, we need to remember that pro sports use tools like salary caps or taxes to maintain some form of competitive balance. These are not being used by colleges. Instead, the only rule that seems to be governing college football right now is Darwin’s rule that only the fittest will survive and thrive. Makes me wonder if some universities will opt out of this madness.
Dillon Gabriel who played QB for UCF and entered the Portal and announced he was going to UCLA, did an about face as soon as he learned that Caleb Williams was in the Portal and is now going to OU. He apparently was in LA all ready to enroll at UCLA when he head about the OU opportunity and got right on a plane to Norman. One thing this does is ensures that Williams is not likely to decide to return to OU.
Would anyone be shocked to one day see teams rely extensively on the portal and just throw recruiting of high schoolers aside ?
That would be quite a reach George. Recruiting will always be necessary to having a successful program, but also the transfer portal can be helpful as well.
