Geez, Cameron Smith makes a stupid play on the 18th after a terrible drive. Tried to thread it through trees rather than taking his medicine and leaving par on the table and the playoff. And just as it happens to me he hits a tree square and it ricochet out of bounds.
Bryson has the ultimate bad ending to his bad back nine, a 3 putt green. After a good 50+ foot putt he lips out the 3-4 footer.
When you're playing a par 5 and you drive it over 350 yds. and then hit a wedge that rolls off the back of the green and down a hill, it ain't your day.
Ancer wins on the 2nd playoff hole, his first win on the PGA Tour. Both he and Burns hit great 2nd shots, Sam ended up a few inches inside Ancer. But lipped out after Ancer made his putt.
I'm pretty sure that if AJ was his caddie that Cameron Smith would have never tried the impossible shot that he failed to make.
I missed this ...at the WGC St Jude. Do you think that after the 3rd ball in the water his caddy, AJ, would have suggested aiming to the left edge of the green? Instead of continuing to go at the pin?
Last gasp for the FEDEX CUP is this weekend at the Wyndham Championship. They always keep track of those on the bubble both sides, who is going up and who is going down. Field will likely be very weak at the top, but this tourney means a lot to those trying to get into the FEDEX CUP and/or keep their PGA Tour card.
I had a "Bagger Vance" moment like that a few years ago. Hit the tree to the right square and the ricochet hit my right knee then my left shoulder and continued behind me over a yard fence landing feet away from a lady planting flowers in her backyard. Then I thought I might have to perform the Heimlich on my brother in law who started choking from his laughter. It's a tough game.
A lot of low scores today. Cam Smith with a 60,three guys shot 62 and one 63 so far, John Rahm is - 17 through 11 today and really playing well. Speith after such a great round yesterday is +2 through 14 and sliding down the leader board currently @-5
Tony Finau wins the Northern Trust yesterday in a playoff. It's his first win in a long time, he's had a lot of top 10's but no wins since something like 2016. BMW is this week, instead of being in Chicagoland it's moved to Owings Mills Maryland, just outside of Baltimore at Caves Valley Golf Club. It looks like it's a beautiful facility.
Also it's being reported that Patrick Reed is hospitalized with double pneumonia. He didn't play last week at the Northern Trust reportedly due to an ankle injury. It's put both the Fedex Cup and Ryder Cup (he'd have to be a Captains pick) in doubt. “I just want to update everyone,” Reed said in a statement released by the Golf Channel’s Todd Lewis. “First and foremost — thank you all for your support. The good news is, my ankle is okay. The bad news is I’ve been in the hospital with bilateral pneumonia. I’m on the road to recovery, once I’m cleared from the doctors — I look forward to returning. I wish you all the best and I can’t wait to get back out there!” In other odd news. Bryson DeChambeau is going to enter one of those Long Drive Contests. He's clearly one of the longest drivers on Tour, currently just ahead of Cameron Champ and Rory McIlroy. He doesn't have the longest drive though this year, that is Lee Westwood at 425, he's 5th at 414. On the Long Drive Tour though he'd be pretty average, he's friends with Kyle Berkshire one of the best in the world who has had drives in competition over 475 yards. So I wouldn't expect him to be competitive. The odd thing is that the event is Sept 27th and the Ryder Cup is Sept 24th-26th. So I guess he's hopping a private jet to get to New Mexico where the event is going to be held. Who has the longest drive in history on the PGA tour? It's a mind boggling 767 yds, but it was on a 456 yd par 4!! 1. Carl Cooper (787 yards, 3rd hole at Oak Hills Golf Club, San Antonio, Texas at the Texas Open in 1992) However, Austin’s effort looks like a 60 per cent sand wedge compared to Carl Cooper’s hole to remember at the 1992 Texas Open. When the 31-year-old journeyman pro stood on the 456-yard par four, he could not have imagined he would have ended up more than 300 yards out of position. He was supposed to be playing the third at Oak Hills but his drive landed on a cart path, careered past the green, the fifth green, the sixth tee and eventually came to rest behind the 12th green after being slowed by straying onto a maintenance path. Almost needing a taxi to get back into play, it was no surprise that Cooper ended with a double bogey. But then, despite never having posted a top-ten finish in a PGA Tour event, he had earned his place in golfing history.
Article on Caves is interesting. They've been prepping the course and making changes so it will challenge the pro's. It has hosted a Senior Tour event and it won't play the same as for those guys. In that Senior Players, McCarron posted rounds of 67-68-69-66 on the way to an 18-under-par winning score. Since then and with the announcement that the PGA Tour would be coming to Caves, the club built several new tee boxes to add some 250 to 300 yards (this week’s yardage is listed as 7,542), built a few new bunkers, re-built the remaining ones, and strengthened the rough in spots to prepare for most of the best players in the world. “We’ve lengthened a number of holes by adding new tees and repositioning fairway bunkers so that relative to the distances that everybody is hitting it now, the golf course plays the way it was designed to play,” said Bernie Najar, Caves Valley’s Director of Instruction. “That coupled with every bunker has been re-done … the new tee boxes and new bunkers all have the latest and greatest technology for drainage. We pretty much did a massive renovation in partnership with the PGA Tour to put together a phenomenal experience for the players and the fans.” With its trove of shot data, the tour provided some insights for the renovation work in advance of the BMW Championship. “So it’s all been scaled accordingly,” Najar said. “They have GPS to really help with the renovations to show where the players hit it and where these bunkers need to go. And at the same time, it’s made our golf course more member-friendly from the standpoint that they are not driving it into certain bunkers that they used to.” What makes Caves Valley, set for its PGA Tour debut, a golf 'fairytale land'
John Rahm and 3 others tied at -5 in the BMW. Dustin Johnson and Tony Finau at -4 They are all on the back nine right now.
Dustin and Finau at -5 and PHIL!!! at -4. oh yeah just noticed a tired Rory is also at -5. He threw his 3 wood into the woods last week at the Northern Trust. I wonder if somebody went and got it for him or does he have a new one in the bag!
What a day for Bryson, missed a short putt for a round of 59. I can relate to that, not the 59 part but miss of the short putt!
