I'd be in my car if I'm listening to the radio (otherwise I'd be watching on TV) I don't channel surf in the car during a sporting event.

I hear you Terry, but it seems like the athletes may become more worried about the deals than they are about preparing for the next game. I may have to find something else to do on Saturday afternoons in the fall.

The Tide have laid out very specific guidelines for the NIL, as can be seen at the link.

Media Days are coming up, the Big 12 Media Days will be starting this week. Talk will be about OU and Spencer Rattler (who won't be there), Iowa State and their 20 something returning starters, Texas and Steve Sarkesian's first season. OU is of course the favorite to win the Big 12, and Iowa State is picked 2nd with the Longhorns picked to finish 3rd.

SEC Media Days will start next Monday in Hoover. I'll miss Steve Spurrier, again! :D

Question from a Clemson fan about recruiting in a mailbag article on The Athletic.

Clemson is recruiting better than it did when it won its national championships. Yet, as a Clemson fan, I’m less optimistic about its chances to win a national championship in the coming years because it seems like some schools (Alabama, Ohio State, and Georgia) are stockpiling talent at even greater levels. Those classes are historically deep. Thus, even as Clemson and some others improve, the gap between them and the very top recruiting schools is growing. Is that true? — David S.

    Answer
    :

Let me begin by using my favorite statistic: Only three teams in the modern era of recruiting dating back to 2000 have won a national title without having signed a top-five class in any of the previous four years. Those three teams are Auburn (2010) and Clemson twice (2016 and 2018). The quarterbacks on those three teams were Cam Newton, Deshaun Watson and Trevor Lawrence. Oh, and all three of those teams also had top-10 classes on their rosters.

So in summation, recruiting matters. Having a star quarterback does, too. But Clemson has always been the example most commonly used for the “stars don’t matter” people, and rightfully so. Dabo Swinney and his staff have proven to be the best talent evaluators in college football, and the Tigers went from a solid program to one of the five most dominant forces in the sport through scouting and development.

Your question, however, brings up a keen observation and something I’ve wondered myself: How sustainable is the Swinney way in a world in which Alabama and Ohio State are signing double-digit top-100 players nationally in a single class. Clemson has improved in its recruiting numbers, too, but the Tigers aren’t doing what Alabama, Ohio State and Georgia are doing. Look back at the 2021 cycle, Clemson finished with the No. 5 class, but it had only three five-star prospects. Alabama (seven), Ohio State (six) and Georgia (four) are stockpiling five-star talent at such an absurd level, and even Clemson isn’t reaching that mark.

If you’re a Clemson fan, you have to wonder: Can Dabo keep winning national titles with rosters that, on paper, aren’t as talented?

Before we continue, I want to make the point that I’m not predicting that Clemson is going to stink. The Tigers are still going to own the ACC, and Swinney is going to field dominant teams. But the line between that and being a top-three program in the country consistently competing with Ohio State and Alabama is really thin. And as recruiting rankings continue to favor those teams, it will be harder for Swinney to keep doing things his way. The Swinney rules — like no official visits in the spring, rarely taking transfers and his no visit policy for committed players are going to change eventually. I can promise you that.

Here’s something else to consider. Ohio State and Alabama are now also recruiting the quarterback position at the highest possible level, which wasn’t the case at the height of Clemson’s dominance between 2016 and 2018. The competition at the top is getting better.

To answer your question, I do think Clemson will continue to be a regular in the College Football Playoff. But it would not surprise me if the Tigers are met with a harsh reminder of their talent discrepancy when they gets on the same field as the likes of Alabama in the near future. Swinney has been able to overcome that through superior talent evaluation, but how far can that go?

It won’t last forever. You know what sustains a top-three program in 2021? Signing 10 percent of the top 100 players nationally in a given class.

These things run in cycles. Alabama and Ohio State will not always be on top, but I think the article is mostly correct. The talent evaluation and development part of is as important as the ability to get the 5-stars.

Texas A&M has a top rated QB verbal for the class of 2023. Eli Holstein, perfect name for a A&M QB!

2023 quarterback Eli Holstein has committed to the Aggies following a recent visit to College Station. The Louisiana native has been considered to be a name on top of Jimbo Fisher’s board, making his commitment a priority.

Holstein is considered to be a top 10 player at the position entering the 2021 season. Last year with Zachary High School, he threw had 941 passing yards and six touchdowns through the first seven weeks of 2020. The team reached the quarterfinals of the Class 5A playoffs.

Interesting conversation on ND Boards over the opener at FSU. Many wanting to know about tailgating and every ND fan who has been to FSU for games as we've played there 2 times now said that it was a very welcoming place that people in bars bought them drinks and welcomed them. Very positive.

I wonder if Gator fans have the same experience? :D

The All Transfer Team for 2021....just goes to show you have things have changed in this new free agent college football world. Even 5 years ago you couldn't have imagined we'd ever have an article on an All-Transfer team.

One thing I noted at the Big 12 media day was that there are still going to be protocols for players. He commented that while the B12 recommends all student athletes be vaccinated that the B12 can't mandate they be vaccinated. He even mentioned the issue that came up with NC State in the CWS. He implied that unlike last year where teams that got into trouble with Covid issues could post pone/reschedule or just not play that this year they will just have to forfeit.

Hand signs to opposing players are a penalty, not sure why this guy thinks the Horns down isn't taunting.
