gip...I see you have a famous ND alum living near you who passed away. Probably more prominent in Sid's Time at ND, would have likely been a '65 grad. Walt Sahm, 78, died on Jan. 5 after battling complications from COVID-19. The 6-foot-9 Sahm, who was living in The Villages in Central Florida with his wife, Patricia, was an Indiana All-Star basketball player at Cathedral in 1961 and went on to star at Notre Dame, where he scored 1,077 points and still holds the career record for rebounds per game (16.9). Indiana Basketball Hall of Famer Walt Sahm dies at 78
Although I attended a number of ND Club meeting here, I'm sure I never met him. I'd remember someone 6ft. 9in. We lost someone in our neighborhood to Covid last week. So far the other half dozen or so have all recovered. The vaccine is coming none too soon.
I knew Walt when we were in school. He was a year ahead of me. He was as nice a guy as you could know. A big teddy bear off the court. An outstanding BB player on the court. We had very good teams in those years with exceptional players in his class, including Larry Sheffield from NY, and Jay Miller and Ron Reed from Indiana. Reed went on to be a two sport pro athlete in the NBA and MLB (pitcher). To this day, it stands out in my opinion as arguably the best class ever in terms of the number of quality players. R.I.P.
We are scheduled to get our first vaccine shot Jan 22. Interesting that we got our appointment over a week ago and we advised a number of our friends where to call and to put up with the wait if they got put on hold. Interesting that several of them finally got through about a week after we did, but got their appointment 3 days ahead of us and also a date for the second shot which we don't have. What happened is that they expanded from 2 days a week giving the shots to three days a week. But we are on the schedule.
I see that Germany is requiring that you wear N95 masks when you go out and is making them available to the general public. Of I wear N95 masks all day everyday in dentistry and since Nov I have been wearing N95 masks when I go grocery shopping or enter any public building, which is not very often as I try to avoid going inside anything but a grocery store. But I have had to enter pharmacies and home improvement type stores, ACE Hardware, etc. But I really try hard not to go inside.
Mary and I signed up for a vaccination in a neighboring county on this coming Fri. Then they announced that shots were available to be scheduled here in the Villages. We applied online and were given this Tues. and Feb. 16. We got emails yesterday saying that the scheduled shots here in the Villages were being suspended due to lack of vaccine. We're disappointed like thousands others here but we still have our "backup" vaccinations scheduled for Fri. I really hope that Friday's appointment isn't cancelled.
Here's my rant. Spent an hour last Monday on the phone trying to schedule vaccine appointments (Lee County's system) and an hour on the computer today trying to schedule through Collier County. I don't mind waiting my turn...but why cant people register to get it and then get notified when their slot comes up. Why the hell is it every man for himself and a weekly or biweekly fight to get in?? What makes me really mad is all these damn Public Health and Epidemiology Experts...who've been sanctimoniously telling us what to do and not do (and sometimes even disagreeing with each other) and changing their recommendations constantly (but if we dare question them we are "anti-science")...all these smarty pants who've been "preparing" for this for years ("we told ya this was coming"), who supposedly studied all this Public Health stuff...and NEVER thought about how to carry out a mass vaccine program??? Don't get me wrong...I'm not mad that it's gonna take a while to get everyone who wants it vaccinated...I'm just mad that it's such a cluster f***. /rant
Here in the Garden State we have been registering for about a month now. We are alternately told by our Governor that we are A. in short supply or B. We have supply but distribution lags. Bascially the same stories you guys are getting.
My father received his today along with every resident and the staff at his assisted living facility in Lake Placid FL... Hope those who have been able to schedule get it soon
Spent 2 hours at 6am trying to get a Publix appt. Then 30 minutes at 9am trying to get a Lee County appt.
This is President Biden at the Lincoln Memorial hours after signing an Executive Order mandating masks on all Federal property. Notice anything missing? blob:https://nypost.com/a2315284-ec32-4eba-b23c-2bbe42ddc082
We did gipper thanks. We got the other one Merdenia, I may have spelled it wrong. We go back Feb 19 for the second shot.
We can get a second shot as of 2/12 but times aren't set yet. The first thing I did when I got home was buy plane tickets. Time for a little vacation.
