FLASHBACK: Thousands of USPS mailboxes removed during Obama-Biden administration Even Obama knew that the United States Postal Service was a money pit. In 2016, then-President Obama proposed that the USPS slash 12,000 jobs. In 2009, Obama compared the USPS with private mail carriers, and pointed out that they were thriving while the USPS consistently struggled. "I mean, if you think about it, UPS and FedEx are doing just fine, right? No, they are," Obama said at a town hall meeting in New Hampshire. "It's the post office that's always having problems."
Stu.... did Obama publicly criticize the legitimacy of mail-in voting 3 months before the 2012 election and state to news media that Republicans couldn't vote properly if he defunded the postal service? Slight difference wouldn't you say?
On the vote by mail. I've been voting by Mail since I became eligible when I turned 65, it's easy and you don't stand in lines, which back then nobody feared the situation, but I didn't like standing in lines! I do think though that even under the best of circumstances that mass voting by mail will be a problem. I know people who don't vote by mail because they don't make up their minds on exactly how they are going to vote till the night before the election and a mail in vote can't arrive days after the election. But mainly the system just isn't set up for tens of millions of mail in voters, possible fraud aside, there are going to be problems with people who don't get their votes in on time, and there will be problems getting them counted timely. We are used to knowing the results that night, we won't know for at least a week or maybe more and be prepared for all sorts of voter complaints.
The other thing about voting is that the Democrats, esp Pelosi and her henchman Dave, keep trying to make out like the Federal Govt is in charge. Truth is that voting even in Presidential elections is a local process, your county is in charge of the voting, not the President. They say where the voters can vote, what machines or other way of recording the vote are used. Remember the hanging chads? Well that was a ballot designed by the democrat controlled Palm Beach County, but when it all went south the Democrats screamed bloody murder that it was a plot by Republicans. Pelosi wants to usurp the local control of the elections, something the constitution does not support.
Pelosi has already proven that she has very little respect for the law if it gets in her way and she will do about anything to further her agenda. Lie, cheat whatever.
I hope they can turn it around, but cases in Hawaii are skyrocketing...after all the praise they got for their harsh early and continued lockdown. Do lockdowns work or just delay the spikes? New Zealand got all kinds of praise for their tight lockdown...and now they are starting to have some cases pop up. Some countries have done better than others...but others had their spikes before we did...Some countries didn't lockdown and did fine...others locked down and still had their problems. Countries like Japan and S. Korea practically locked everybody in their homes...I don't see Americans putting up with that. Are some of these countries that apparently did well still going to have a spike? Are countries who had their spike (or like ours...whose seem to be coming down) going to go through another spike? Dave, the data that you posted, while not irrelevant, needs context...many of those other countries have been through their own massive spike so looking at "yesterday's numbers" doesn't really prove much in terms of those countries effective fight against the virus. Deaths per million population; France 466 Australia 17 Spain 613 UK 609 Japan 9 Germany 111 Canada 239 USA 525 Oh...AJ...Sweden 573 You can add Italy 586 and Belgium 858
Stu I believe that personal responsibility counts more than lockdowns. It's very tough to keep following all the social distancing rules etc. but we absolutely have to if we are going to suppress transmission of the virus. My own cousin is the biggest anti-Trumper I know and yet his penchant for going to bars landed him with Covid-19 very recently. The lack of leadership in setting a good national example for his supporters and the rest of the nation as well is what I fault Trump for the most.... such as his mocking Biden for wearing a mask back in May and his pushing "cures" that don't exist so he could minimize the appearance of a virus out of control to maximize his election chances. Trump's anti-science stance in the fight against Covid-19 has damaged the country economically and cost American lives and continues to allow the virus to intrude into our everyday lives.
Many would say that your "pushing cures that don't exist" stance is anti-science as well...and purely political. I don't mind scientists debating the issue and I insist that it be studied...but it should not be a political football. The "risks" of HCQ are FAR overstated by those who just want to play politics. The bigger question to me is the effectiveness. As far as your cousin, we all have penchants that we are reluctant to give up. For some it's Karaoke gatherings.
