Don, unless Fields can get a hardship then he will have to sit next year out. There are reports that he may cite a racial slur incident as a reason for the transfer.
A racial slur as a reason to get immediate eligibility on transfer? I wonder if UGA will fight that, like Ole Miss fought Shea Patterson's request for immediate eligibility. If the NCAA grants him that based on that then the flood gates could open. I think he see's that Fromm had a great season and that barring injury he could end up sitting another year as a part time player maybe even 2 if From stays all 4 years. All while looking at Trevor Lawrence get accolades as a starter as a true frosh and be on course for top of the 1st round NFL pick when he's eligible in a couple of years.
Kp, I realize what you are saying, but it seems like the rule is being watered down and I would not be surprised in the least if he becomes eligible for the upcoming season. Things are not what they use to be.
There was an incident at the Georgia/Tenn game where a Georgia baseball player hurled a racial slur aimed at Fields. People around him reported it and he was dismissed from the baseball team. Seems a bit of a stretch to allow immediate eligibility. Georgia kicks baseball player off team after alleged racial slurs
The front runners appear to be 1. Ohio State...Is the depth chart there more friendly Don? 2. Oklahoma ... watching what Mayfield and Murray accomplished in Lincoln Riley's offense would have to be a draw. 3. Penn State ...his original commitment before flipping to UGA 4. Miss State ...Joe Moorhead was the PSU OCoord who recruited him 5. Florida ...would be the perfect fit for the Mullins offense. I wonder if he would go to JUCO for a year so that he wouldn't have to sit out and not play. That's what Cam Newton did.
Depends a bit on whom you talk to assuming Haskins moves on, Tate Martel will be favored to start, Mathew Baldwin would be the backup. Both are considered dual-threat QB's. The big question is whether Tate Martel will fit into Coach Day's offensive plans? Another interesting tidbit is that Haskins and Fields seem to be pretty close. A lot can happen in this one.
@Don Ballard is there any talk about what Day's offensive plans might look like, do people think there is a change coming or will he stick with the Urban Meyer offense?
I think that Day will be his own man, but at the same time I think he's been pretty involved in the offense as it is...also note that he's been a WR coach, QB coach, or OC wherever he's been.
One of the things that has changed at Texas is that under Mack Brown it was rare to see a recruiting class with a non-Texas kid in it. Now with Herman we've gone national and have a bunch of kids who didn't go to HS in Texas. We have 10 kids from out of state in this years class, we have one kid (Javoone Shepherd) an OL from the Houston area who has given a verbal but reportedly won't sign till Feb. That always makes people nervous, why won't he sign if he's committed. This will be a top 10 Class for Tom Herman.
Just read a report that Ohio State is interested in Justin Fields, that's not news...but that they may also have interest in Alabama QB Jalen Hurts and maybe even ND QB Brandon Wimbush. Also read that Ohio State lost Dwan Mathis a 4* QB to Georgia. Interesting saga with this kid, committed to Iowa State, then flipped to Michigan State, then flipped to Ohio State and now final flip is to Georgia. From what I read they decided to change to Georgia when they found out Justin Fields was leaving.
Another serial flipper. 5* safety Daxton Hill flipped from Mich to Alabama after reading that Harbaugh might leave for the NFL, but then after being assured that Harbaugh is going no where he flipped back to Michigan today.
Recruits have evolved in ways to tout themselves. Used to be the hat trick, putting 3 or 4 hats out there and then picking the one you are going to sign your LOI with, then we went to the TV Announcements at All Star games, and on ESPN, now they have all sorts of videos they make and post on their twitter/instagram accounts, now this. Tyler Johnson is an OL from Conroe Tx.
Well the Gators got 21 signatures today and one recruit that won't sign until Feb. I'm happy with our class but with Alabama, Georgia, Texas A & M and LSU being the top four in the 747 rankings the Gators have a steep hill to climb.
Hurts will be able to play immediately but Fields will likely have to sit out a year. Personally I hope he does not go to Florida. I wanted him last year but we have what looks to me to be a pretty good lineup with our starter, and the two Jones boys. One will be a red shirt freshman next season and the other a true freshman.
Bryce Benhart........6-9 305 TE from MN.......just kiddin'.........Punter..........kiddin' again........ It's Starting to happen again folks............got 2 words for ya.............Choo Choo.......
Ohio State ended up with 15 signees, including 3 five star players. A large number of holdovers limited the number of offers. Zach Harrison was the top prize. With Coach Meyer retiring, we lost a couple of recruits and a couple of flips as well, but overall I think we will be fine. Coach Day has proven himself to be an excellent recruiter.
